The Following is an ongoing database of recorded sightings and hauntings from all over Scotland.

 

POLTERGEISTS

Location  Stocking, Kirkcudbrightshire.

Documented by the local minister, the Reverend Andrew Telfair, this poltergeist came to haunt the house of Andrew Mackie. The phenomena began one night in February 1695. The Haunting lasted for a period of 3 months. Phenomena included fires started, fireballs thrown, stones raining down, physical attacks on the family and on 3 ministers who intervened.

Location  Glenluce.

A weaver in Glenluce, Gilbert Campbell, became 1st aware of unusual activity when his young daughter complained of hearing shrill, whistling noises in her ears. Phenomena included the children being physically attacked in their beds, fires started around the house, belongings being hidden and hurled around. Spirit claimed to have been sent from Hell to torment the occupants of the house.

Location  Sauchie, Clackmannanshire.

Between the dates of 1960-1961, a young girl named Virginia Campbell had moved from Ireland to the village, in Scotland. Events started shortly after whenever she was at home. Phenomena included strange knocking noises, objects seen to lift and move around, including her desk at school. The activity eventually lessened more until dying out.

 

 HAUNTED CASTLES

 

 Location  Abergeldie Castle, near Balmoral.

 A french woman employed at the castle, was suspected of witchcraft. After being arrested and charged, she was taken to a nearby hill and burned at the stake. Her vengeful spirit is said to have returned to the castle after her death.

 Location  Ardvreck Castle, Sutherland.

 This castle is said to be haunted by the ghost of the former Lady of Ardvreck.

 

 Location  Balcomie Castle, Fife.

The ghost of a minstrel boy, starved to death 400 years ago, is reputed to haunt this castle. imprisoned by the Owner, for whistling.

 Location  Balgonie Castle, Fife.

Originally built in the 14th Century, this castle is said to be haunted by the spirit of a woman named "Green Jeanie". Her spirit is said to apear  at a part of the castle constructed later in the 18th century.

 Location  Ballindalloch Castle, Banffshire.

This castle has a reputation for ghostly sightings. Built in the 16th century, it is reputed to be haunted by a beautiful lady, in the Pink Tower, a bedroom in the castle. Also the spirit of General James Grant is reputed to be seen, riding a great white horse. The dining room is the haunt of a green lady.

 Location  Barcaldine Castle, Loch Creran.

This castle is haunted by 2 Campbell brothers, Donald and Duncan Campbell. Donald was killed by his feuding enemy, Stewart of Appin. The spirits of both are said to haunt the castle.

 Location  Bedlay Castle, Chryston, Glasgow.

In 1350, Bishop Cameron was found dead, floating in the nearby loch. Since then, his ghostly form has been seen in the castle. An exorcism performed, was unsuccesful.

 Location  Borthwick Castle, Edinburgh.

Several spirits are said to haunt this castle, including Mary Queen of Scots and a young serving girl, murdered by the Lord Borthwick, when she became pregnant.

 Location  Braemar Castle, Grampian.

Haunted by a tragic young bride. Awakening in the morning to discover her new husband was gone, she was distraught and hurled herself from the window. The young man returned from an early morning hunt to be told the tragic news.

 Location  Brodick Castle, Arran.

 Reputed to be haunted by the spirits of an unknown man and a deer.

 Location  Brodie Castle, Morayshire.

 Since 1889, this castle is said to be haunted by the ghost of the Earl of Brodie.

 Location  Buchanan Castle, Drymen.

 Eerie whisperings and groans have been heard at this castle.

 Location  Buckholm Tower, Galashiels. (See investigations)

This ruined tower is reputed to be haunted by  an evil Laird and spectral hounds.The laird had a hatred of the Covenanters. 2 local covenanters were hung from hooks in his cellar.

 

Location  The Castle of Mey, John O`Groats.

The home of her majesty, the Queen Mother, is haunted by the spirit of a green lady, in a room at the top of an old tower. Killed, when she accidentally fell from her bedroom window.

 Location  Cawdor Castle, Nairn.

Built in 1370, this castle is reputed to be haunted by the ghost of a female with no hands. The daughter of the Earl of Cawdor, her hands were cut off by her father, after a secret romance was discovered by him.

 Location  Claypotts Castle, Dundee.

This 16th century castle came into possesion of the Viscount of Dundee, Bonnie Dundee, in 1672. rumours spread that he held wild orgies, and consorted with witches and warlocks. On the 29th of May each year, the ghostly form of a white lady appears at an upper window. At the time of Halloween, for many years, the castle was said to glow with eerie lights of fires, and sounds of wicked laughter and revelry were heard.

 Location  Comlongon Castle, Dumfriesshire.

Haunted by the spectre of a green lady who threw herself from a tower.

 Location   Cortachy Castle, Angus.

This ancient family seat of the Ogilvy clan is said to be haunted by the ghost of a drummer. Only at certain ominous times is he heard, when an Ogilvy is due to die.

 Location  Craigievar Castle, Aberdeen.

The blue room in the tower of this castle is rumoured to be haunted by a former Clan Gordon member, who fell to his death here. There is also  alleged to be a ghost of a fiddler who fell down a well and drowned.

 Location  Crathes Castle, Banchory.

This 16th century castle has a reputed green lady haunting its tower. Skeletons were uncovered during restoration work .

 Location  Culcreuch Castle, Fintry. (see investigations)

Ghostly harp music has been heard coming from the chinese bird room. Other spectres include a floating animal head on the battlements and a grey floating mass.

 Location  Culzean Castle, Ayrshire.

The castle has a number of ghosts including, a ghostly piper, a young lady in a ballroom gown and an apparition that apears on the main staircase.

 

Location  Delgatie Castle, Aberdeen.

This tower house dates from the 16th century. One of the towers is alleged to be haunted by the ghost of a woman with red hair.

 Location  Drumlanrig Castle, Dumfriesshire.

This impressive 17th century castle is the haunt for several reported ghostly types, including, a headless woman and a fearsome giant yellow monkey. 

 Location  Duchal Castle,  Renfrewshire.

The ghost of an excommunicated monk is reputed to haunt this area. A number of bones were found in an upper room when part of the castle was demolished

 Location  Duns Castle,  Borders.

 A historic 14th century castle, reportedly haunted by the ghost of a young soldier.

 Location  Dunstaffnage Castle, Oban.

13th century castle that boasts several ghost sightings, including a green lady that is associated with poltergeist activity.

 Location  Duntrune Castle,  Argyll.

Once the seat of the Campbell clan. A brave piper was left to bleed to death after having his fingers cut off. The sounds of his pipes are reportedly heard from the tower.

 Location  Duntulm Castle,  Skye.

Now a ruin, this castle is apparently haunted by 2 spirits. One being the cousin of the Chief ,of the Macdonalds of Sleat, the other is a female spirit named Margaret, once a ward of the Chief.

 Location  Dunvegan Castle,  Skye.

Not so much haunted, as the location of a fabled treasure. The Fairy Flag. this flag when unfurled, was rumoured to protect the previous owners from all harm. reputed to possess great supernatural powers.

 

Location  Ethie Castle,  Arbroath.

The spectre of Cardinal Beaton is rumoured to parade slowly around the castle and near his bedchamber. He was murdered by Protestant nobles on the 29th may, 1546.

 

Location  Fyvie Castle,  Aberdeenshire.

Alleged to be the haunt of a ghostly drummer, a grey lady and a green lady, it is now thought that the green lady, Lilias Drummond, has been laid to rest after her skeleton was put back in a wall.

 

Location  Gight Castle,  Aberdeenshire.

 A piper entered a secret tunnel here and never returned again. similiar to the piper story of Edinburgh Castle, his music is alleged to still be heard coming from the secret tunnel.

 Location  Glamis Castle, Dundee.

This huge castle is the king of all haunted castles. The tales of this royal castle include: stories of a hidden secret room and the hideous monster who lived in it, the spectres of: a little coloured serving boy, a dark cloaked military man, a woman with open and bloody mouth where her tongue was cut out, a running figure named Jack the Runner. There is also tales of a vampire existing here.

 

Location  Hermitage Castle,  Hawick.

This 13th century castle boasts 2 spectres. The first is the shade of  Sir Alexander Ramsay, Sheriff of Teviotdale. Sir Alexander incurred the wrath of a knight and was thrown into a dungeon where he starved to death. It is said his sad, hungry figure walks the ruins still. The second ghost to haunt this castle is a nasty piece of work. Lord Soulis had a ghastly reputation in his time. Rumoured to practise black magic and responsible for the murders of local children, he met his end ,when the locals marched on the castle. His final doom was to be boiled alive in a vat of molten lead.

 

Location  Inverarary Castle,  Inverarary.

Reported to be the haunt of a murdered servant boy.

 

Location  Kellie Castle,  Fife.

The spectre of a previous owner, James Lorimer, has been reportedly sighted here. The spirit of Annie Erskine is also reputed to haunt here, usually around the staircase. Annie met her end when she fell from an upper window.

 

Location  Littledean Tower, Roxburghshire.

This 15th century tower is said to be haunted by a former laird. The laird was a wickedly unpleasant man who mistreated his wife often. The Laird met his violent end after running afoul of a local witch.

 

Location  Meggernie Castle,  Fife.

This 16th century towerhouse was under ownership of the Menzies when a tragic event befell it. The lord of the castle had a beautiful young wife, who was much admired . The husband became increasingly jealous of his wife and suspecting she was having an affair, murdered her. Afterwards, he chopped her body in half, burying the top half in the tower and the bottom half in the graveyard. Male guests staying in the "haunted room" are rumoured to be awakened with a teasing kiss on the cheek. Sightings of the flirtsome spirit indicate that either half of her is seen but never both together.

 Location  Muchalls Castle, Stonehaven.

Once a base for smugglers, this castle is reputed to have a haunted room. The ghost that haunts the room is said to be a lady, green in colour.

 

Location  Newton Castle,  Blairgowrie.

This 14th century castle is reportedly haunted by a forlorn young woman named "Lady Jean". Enlisting the aid of a local witch, to help win the heart of the man she loved, her dreams came true.Unfortunately, not for long. On the night of the wedding ceremony, the Lady Jean let out an unearthly scream and collapsed dead at the side of her new husband to be. On Halloween, it is rumoured that the grave of Lady Jean turns 3 times.

 

Location  Sanquhar Castle,  Dumfries.

Once the home of the Crichtons of Dumfries, now the castle lies in ruins. 2 ghosts are alleged to haunt this castle. The first is the spirit of John Wilson, who was unjustly hung in 1597. His ghost  is said to appear moaning and clanking chainsThe other ghost belongs to Marion Dalpeddar, who disappeared in 1590. In 1875, the skeleton of a young girl was uncovered, she was found face down in a pit.

 Location  Spedlins Tower,  Dumfries.

A local miller, Dunsty Porteous, fell out of favour with the Lord of the Tower. The miller was thrown into the tower dungeon, whereapon the lord went away on business. The poor miller was forgotten for a while and when the dungeon door was opened, it was discovered he had starved to death, but not before he gnawed his manacled hands off. The miller began to haunt the tower, moaning, crying and raging. A bible was placed in the dungeon wall, which confined the miller inside. Whenever the bible is removed, it is said that Porteous will haunt the tower above.

 

Location  Tioram Castle,  Argyll.

These ruins were once the seat of the Macdonalds of Clanranald. The 12th chief of Clanranald was said to be haunted by the spectre of a giant black frog.The frog was of demonic origins.
