Tokay/Golden Geckos

This part is dedicated to Tokay Geckos and Golden Geckos. Though they share the same page, they are very different animals. Goldens are quite peaceful and not too large while Tokays have a reputation for being aggressive and can get quite large. For more information on these two go to http://www.tokaygeckos.com . If you have questions or comments about this or any other herp, email me at HerpHQ@yahoo.com

Tokay Basics:

Tokay Geckos are very attractive, large, and fast lizards. They are colored blue with orange to red spots. Tokays can be quite aggressive and have the worst bite of the gecko family. If you get a wild caught Tokay it will often be more aggressive. They normally get to 14'' and above. These guys do well in 20-30 gallon tanks. Be sure they have plenty of hiding spots and  objects to climb. Even though geckos don't typically drink from dishes, put a Reptirock(tm) in with it to increase humidity. You should mist the gecko and the tank daily because this is how they drink. There is also a new product called Little Dripper(tm) available at stores like PetSmart that constantly drips for them to drink. Use a heat lamp with a nocturnal bulb keeping the temp between 75-86F degrees. NEVER USE A HEAT ROCK as they can burn reptiles badly. In my opinion moss creates this best environment for them as they are from the rain forest. It also traps humidity. But you can also use bark, chemical-free soil, or grass as substrates.

Golden Basics:

If you want a pet to handle, pick a Golden over a Tokay. Goldens grow around 12'' from head to tail. They are golden yellow in light but in dark their skin changes to a milky blue and green. These do well in a 10-20 gallon tank.  Be sure they have plenty of hiding spots and  objects to climb. Feeding:

Tokays and Goldens rely on the same basic diet. They like crickets, waxworms, mealworms, and the occasional fruit or baby food. (I have heard that Tokays MAY like an occasional Pinky but I'm not sure if it is true.) When feeding only put two or three crickets in at a time, believe it or not, the crickets will bite the toes of your gecko. I see more results while feeding waxworms but try whatever you want. Be sure to add vitamins to what you feed it, as their bones will become frail.

Crocodile Geckos

Crocodiles are small, almost tiny geckos. The males can have a bad attitude and be quite territorial. They are nippy but their bites don't hurt very much. For questions or comments email us at HerpHQ@yahoo.com These geckos only get up to 6" so they fair quite well in a ten gallon tank. These geckos require heat lamps set between 75-86F degrees. Provide a means for them to get water like a reptirock(tm) water dish or a simple tupperware(tm) container.Supply plenty of objects to climb because these guys have lots of energy. Hiding spaces are needed for them to cool down. Use moss for a suitable substrate and keep it misted once a day to maintain a humid environment. Feed these geckos waxworms, mealworms, crickets, and occasionally fruit. Powder the live food with vitamin powder to maintain a healthy bone structure.

Leopard/Fat-Tailed Geckos

This section is dedicated to keeping Leopard Geckos and African Fat-Tailed Geckos as pets. These two geckos have virtually the same peaceful personalities. Unlike most geckos, these lack speed and suction pads. Out of all lizards these make the best pets for handling. Thank you for your intrest! Email me at HerpHQ@yahoo.com for questions or comments.

Housing and Basic Care:

These two species of geckos are so similar that the only thing that really separates them is their coloring. They are from the desert areas of Africa and Pakistan and are typically nocturnal. Leopards are yellow with blue, red, and green speckles and bands. Fat-tails are usually deep purple with khaki bands. These fair well in a ten gallon tank. These need hiding spaces for sure. Calcium Sand is the best substrate. A nocturnal heat lamp or heat pad should be used to keep the temperature in the upper 80s. Humidity is good and can be increased by using larger Reptirock(tm) water dishes. These geckos do well in groups, just make sure males don't outnumber females as they will sometimes fight. Logs and other climbing objects should be used also.

Feeding:

I usually feed these animals soley waxworms. However, crickets are acceptable. And occasional sliced grape is a good way for it to get water and vitamins. Be sure you add vitamin powder to the live food to retain healthy bones.
