Marty returns to testify in Todd's defense during Blair's Rape Trial.
Marty: Why don't we try that? Are you the man I think you are, Todd? Are you the man who's changed, who deserves a second chance? Because if you are, I may be able to help you.
Todd: Why would you help me?
Marty: No, hear me out. Your guilt changed you. It shaped who you are. It gave you an identity that you couldn't escape. But now you look different, and you realize it doesn't matter. Looks don't mean much. It's still about what's inside. You find -- what's in there, Todd?
Todd: Broken bones. Metal plates. So many, I go through metal detectors, it sets them off. When I left that hospital, I thought I could change. I knew I could change, finally. And I did. I found Blair, I found my kids, and I made it work. I'm not that man anymore, Marty. I'm not that monster who raped you. I love my wife I love my children, and that's enough.
Marty: Good. That's everything
Marty: As a psychiatrist, I can say that curing sexual predators is rarely, if ever, successful. But Todd was not a classic case of a sexual predator. His rehabilitation was a matter of facing his developmental problems, dealing with them maturely. I -- I came to know Todd in ways that most people never could -- not just as a victim. Subsequently, I was involved in a number of his struggles with his demons, and I saw him accept responsibility for them and work hard at his rehabilitation. I believe he succeeded.
Evangeline: Do you think that Todd Manning is still capable of rape?
Marty: No. No. I think he still has problems with impulse control, but not sexual impulse. Todd was so traumatized by what he did to me, that frankly the one crime he would not commit is rape.
Todd: So for the first time in my life, I felt like I had a future.
Marty: Yeah, maybe you still do.
Todd: Maybe you can't let the past control your life.
Marty: Absolutely
Todd: The last time we were in this hospital together, you saved my life. You gave me your blood instead of letting me die then you showed up in the docks keep me from hurting myself, maybe kill myself after Blair lost the baby. So why is it always you.
Marty: My bad luck I guess.
Todd: Yeah, I guess.
Marty: Go home to your wife, Todd.
Todd: What are you doing here.
Marty: I was at the community center, I was on my way home and I saw your car.
Todd: So
Marty: So I was wondering what you were doing down here at the dock. And then I realized this was where Blair was attacked. Are you alright?
Todd: Sure, of course I am, I lost my son last night. Never been better.
Marty: I'm sorry.
Todd: Who asked you? Just get back in your car and go home.
Marty: Todd
Todd: Leave me alone.
Marty: Just tell me that your not going to
Todd: Jump? What do you care if I do? What does anybody care? If I did take a dive, there's not one person in this stinking town that would shed a tear, especially you. So why the hell not.
Marty: I've been in your place, Todd. I've wanted to jump but I didn't cause it wasn't the answer.
Todd: You know I hate to spoil your life affirming message, Marty but I didn't come here to off myself. I lost my kid last night and I wanted to be alone. Alone. Get it.
Marty: Yeah. All I'm saying is that I know how hopeless things can seem at times but they change. They can.
Todd: Not for me, why should they? I'm Victor Lord's son, that says it all babe. I've been living under a curse since the day I was born.
Marty: That's a weak excuse and you know it. We both know how lucky you are, you were given another shot at life.
Todd: Don't you get it, that kid was my shot at life. Everybody is saying how bad they feel for Blair, how terrible it was that she lost the baby like that. And hey, look I'm not trying to deny that it was terrible but.. Why am I telling you this.
Marty: Because I saw what the baby meant to you.
Todd: Here's where it happened. Where they took away the one good thing I ever did in my life. The only good thing I'll ever do.
Marty: You don't know that.
Todd: Oh, Come on, Marty. Who can list quicker than you all the ways I've screwed up my life. Everybody's life. But when Blair told me that she was pregnant everything changed. I mean I didn't become a saint or anything but I knew that I had one reason to live besides myself. And then when the money fell into my lap, it was like a sign. Like I was meant to take Victor Lord's dirty money and make it clean by giving it to my son. And now its just money, everythings dirt again.
Marty: You still have things to live for.
Todd: Like what.
Marty: Like Blair, and if you weren't standing here feeling sorry for yourself you'd realize that. She needs you, you should be with her.
Todd: Blair doesn't need me
Marty: After what happened.
Todd: Because of what happened. She turned her back on me. She doesn't want anything to do with me.
Marty: She suffered a horrible loss, the worse.
Todd: So did I, I didn't tell her to get lost, I didn't tell her it was her fault.
Marty: She has to blame somebody, I'm sure deep down inside she blames herself the most. She needs time to deal with it Todd, so do you. But you can work it out.
Todd: Do you know where we started. Ground zero. Two losers with one thing in common, we never lied to each other.
Marty: That's more than alot of people start with.
Todd: Mutual misery, like two drunks sharing a bottle of cheap red wine. For awhile there, the baby made it seem like there was something more. That's gone. And there's nothing left to take its place. There sure as hell isn't love, cause that was never there to start with. Arithmatic, three minus one is zero. We got married because of the baby, the baby's gone and the marriage went with it. Do me a favor, Marty. Quit trying to cheer me up and get the hell out of here.
Marty: I'm not leaving till you get home.
Todd: What home.
Marty: You can have another child. Anything's possible. I'm standing here with you.
Todd: One thing is impossible. My son is never coming back. Fine, if you won't leave I will.
Todd: How you been, Marty?
Marty: You know me, fortune smiles.
Todd: Yeah, well, look, uh..I got a little time. What say we go back to your house?
Marty: Like last time?
Todd: Yeah! Oh, anything worth doing is probably worth doing it again. Slower.
Marty: And just what is it that you want to do, Todd?
Todd: This (he kisses her) and That (another kiss) Whats wrong?
Marty: A girl likes a little subtlety.
Todd: Oh, come on, Marty. I know what you want. You're not going to play games with me. What is this?
Marty: What is What?
Todd: Look, are we going back to your house or not?
Marty: You are so devoid of even shallow depth. The answer is I've got a headache.
Todd: Last week, you were as easy as two plus two and now what? You're playing hard to get?
Marty: What's the matter, Toddy? Does it wound your pride, your manly ego to hear the word No? I'll say it soft so your frat boys can't hear. NO!
Todd: Whenever did you learn that word Marty?
Marty: The night you taught it to me, remember, Todd? I asked you to stay with me, to hold me after...But you couldn't be bothered. Well, how does it feel?
Todd: Either your a prize witch or you are completely wacko.
Marty: I'm both sonny. Too bad you're not man enough to handle the combination. Next time I feel the urge to do something stupid and sophomoric, I'll give you a call.
Todd: You go to hell!
Marty: I intend to.
Todd: So come here often?
Marty: Why do you?
Powell: Well, I better go earn some brownie points with Viki
Todd: It's been awhile.
Marty: Has it?
Todd: I keep thinking about the night we got it on.
Marty: The night I asked you to hold me a minute or two and you were already out the door.
Todd: Hey, I had a big exam the next day. I hadn't even cracked a book. Besides, you got your revenge at Rhodi's. Well, you came onto me, lead me on, got me all hot and bothered, and then you were out the door.
Marty: Just so you'd know what it feels like.
Todd: Great, now we're even. Look, why don't we start all over again? I mean, we had something special going on. Or are you that spectacular with all the guys?
Marty: You are unbelievably low.
Todd: Isn't that why you like me?
Todd: Hey, if your friend here is saying no, I'm saying yes, I'll treat you nice. What do you say?
Suede: Get lost pal.
Todd: What's your problem? Besides the obvious.
Suede: My problem is college boys like you who think they can take whatever they want. You aren't worth the sawdust I sweep off the floor.
Jason: It's not worth it man, It's not worth it.
Marty: Yeah, Don't try and defend me now. You had your chance and you said no. So go to hell! And leave me and my date alone. You want to pin me?
Todd: Pin you to what?
Marty: You give me your frat pin and I'll be your girl forever. Like all those old movies. How's that, huh? For all eternity, true blue.
Suede: If this loser is your idea of someone to love for all eternity then you've already gone to hell because this scum is what you meet down there.
Jason: Where you going Toad, huh?
Todd: Call me when you drop the slow learners.
Marty: I'm making their pink slips out right now.
Marty goes home and then calls the bar --
Suede: Rodi's
Marty: Let me speak to Todd
Suede: Marty, is that you?
Marty: Who cares who I am?
Suede: Look, if this is you, Marty, just listen to me. You don't want to...
Marty: Just put Todd on, put Todd on!
Suede: Todd. It's for you. Some girl.
Todd: What girl?
Suede: I don't know. Could be Marty.
Powell: Hey, what'd I tell you? Didn't take her long.
Todd: Hey, babe. What's up, Marty? Marty, are you there?
Marty hangs up phone.
Marty: Please! Oh God, please, please help us! Oh, thank you, thank you! Look, CJ, there's an officer coming downthe hill! Officer, please help us; I can't move! Oh, no! No, no, no!
CJ: Ali! It's you! You came to save us. (Todd continues to look at Marty).
Marty: Todd?
CJ: Marty, it's my genie! He came to save us; everything's gonna be alright. He's my friend; he'll rescue us! Ali, you've got to help us!
Marty: I can't move.
Todd: Yeah, I figured.
Marty: Jessica Buchanan's unconcious in th eback; you have got to get them out, now!
Todd: Oh I do, do I?
Marty: For God's sake, they're kids! We're about to slip off the edge! Hurry up, help them while you can! Please!
CJ: Help us, Ali, please!
Marty: We were forced off the road; a car came out of nowhere and swerved into our lane.
Todd: Yeah, I know. It's the car I was in, police car. They know about the accident; I phoned it in. So, you don't have to worry, okay?
Marty: Yeah, well, it may be too late!
Todd: I don't have time to worry about that, okay? I'm out of here!
CJ: Please, Ali, don't leave!
Marty: CJ, sit still.
CJ: I thought you said we were friends.
Todd: Okay, alright. I'm coming. I'll get you out of there.
CJ: See, Marty! Ali's a good genie!
Marty: Okay, just -- sit still, nice and still.
Todd: C'mon, let's go. Not too fast though, okay?
Marty: Don't worry, fast is not gonna happen.
Todd: Yeah, well, not too slow, either. I ain't got all day!
Marty: I'm doing the best I can!
Todd: Hurry up! I ain't got all day!
Marty: No! Don't you touch me!
Todd: Fine! Do it yourself then, but get out of the car!
CJ: Ali, what about me?
Todd: I'm coming, CJ, just -- be careful.
CJ: I knew you'd save us!
Todd: Okay, Marty get out of the way! For God's sake, get out of the way! Look, she's gonna be alright, okay?
CJ: I told you he could do it! He's a super-hero!
Todd: Yeah, that's me, big hero. Look, uh, no matter what happens with the car, you guys are pretty much clear; you're gonna be fine.
Marty: Fine? Look at Jessica!
Todd: Yeah, well, I radioed into the medic; this place is gonna be swimming in uniforms any minute. I gotta get outta here!
CJ: Ali, don't leave!
Todd: What do you want from me?
M: I want you to take these kids up to the top of the hill and flag down a car!
Todd: Are you out of your mind??
Marty: I don't care if help is on the way; look at her! The cops may not get here in time! You can help her; it's up to you. It's all in your hands.
CJ: Can you help us, Ali?
Todd: Shut up!! Both of you shut up! No more talking! You were right, Marty. My old man's right. I deserve everything I get; I don't think. Alright, CJ, you hold on. Now you hold on tight 'cause if you fall off I ain't stoppin' to pick you up. You got a grip?
CJ: Yeah.
Todd: Okay. Anything else I can do for you?
Marty: Go!
Todd: Don't worry, I'm goin'! I won't leave you down here, okay? Okay?! Hey, I'm talkin' to you; I said okay??
Marty: Okay!
Todd: Good luck, Marty.
CJ: We're coming back, Marty, I promise; we're coming back!
Todd: Marty?! Marty! Marty? Marty, you've gotta get up to the road, you hear me?
Marty: My foot. . . it's. . .
Todd: Fire's spreading, Marty! I can't tell if it's coming up here. Marty, look, this is crazy! I can't stay here! I can't stay! Look, the kids are gonna be alright, okay? Right now -- it's every man for himself. I gotta go.
Marty: No, no. . .
Todd: Alright, this is what I'm gonna do; I'm gonna lift this log and you've got to pull your foot out by yourself. You hear me?
Marty: I can't, I can't.
Todd: You can, Marty! And you will. Now, don't waste my time, 'cause I got places I gotta go. Ready?
Marty: Oh, my leg! My leg!
Todd: You gotta get yourself to the top of hte hill now, Marty, 'cause I gotta move it. Look, Marty, I just can't stay here any longer! You gotta get out of here; the fire could come on up this hill!
Marty: I can't!
Todd: Yes, you can Marty! Look, I can't take you up there; can't you understand that? Can you understand that!?!
Marty: Get away from me!! Get away from me! Don't touch me! Don't you touch me!
Todd: Stop screaming at me, Marty! I won't hurt you; can't you see I'm trying to help you?
Marty: Get away from me!
Todd: Alright, fine, I won't touch you; I won't come anywhere near you!
Marty: Jessica and CJ! Where are they?
Todd: On their way to the hospital.
Marty: Jessica, she was hurt!
Todd: I told you, they're on the way to the hospital. Right now, Marty, you've got to get yourself up to the top of the hill! Marty, you have to. Can't you feel it? The fire's geting closer every minute!
Marty: It hurts -- so much! Aaah!
Todd: I can't believe I'm doing this.
Marty: What are you doing?
Todd: Gotta stop the bleeding. Alright, fine, you do it yourself.
Marty: I can't; I can't do it. Fine, you wanna go, what are you waiting for??
Todd: Good question.
Marty: I don't need you.
Todd: Alright, Marty, you listen to me. I don't blame you. I don't blame you for hating me, I don't blame you if you think I'm some kind of monster. Maybe I am. But, right now, I'm the only chance you've got unless you wanna wait here in case someone else comes along.
Marty: Just go!
Todd: I can't, Marty. Either you're gonna bleed to death or you're gonna burn to death.
Marty: What do you care?
Todd: I don't care! I've just got a lot on my mind, and I don't want anything else on my conscience. Now, I'm gonna carry you out of here, whether you like it or not!
Marty: No! No, no, no!
Todd: C'mon Marty, I can do this. I can carry you out of here and I'm the only chance you've got. So, what's it gonna be, yes or no? Just tell me.
Marty: I don't want you to touch me! I don't want you to help me! I just -- I can't, I just can't!!
Todd: I know you can't, Marty, I know. Now, this is what we gotta do, whether we like it or now, we just gotta do it. Put your arm around me. Marty. Marty.
Todd: Alright, here we are. You're side's stopped bleeding, okay? I think you're gonna be alright.
Marty: It just hurts so -- so much.
Todd: What do you want me to do? Stay here 'til the cops get here? You'd love that, wouldn't you? They'd shoot me before I got my hands in the air. Sorry to disappoint you but I'll be long gone by then.
Marty: What's holding you back?
Todd: Nothing. I just wanna tighten this up. This is something, huh? Enough to make you believe.
Marty: In what?
Todd: Fate, whatever. It's like you and me were born under the same star. What were you doing on this road anyway?
Marty: Taking CJ and Jessica to summer camp.
Todd: Aah, it's gotta be tight, Marty.
Marty: No, no it's not that. CJ! Jessica!
Todd: They're gonna be fine, Marty. Jessica's a good kid, you know? A little mixed up, but she's okay. And CJ -- he's a great kid. I'd never let anything happen to him. What? What're you lookin' at me like that for? You think I eat kids for breakfast?
Marty: I don't know what to think.
Todd: See if you can hold this down without, uh, hurting your side. Alright, alright. I'll do it a little longer, Marty. Just calm down.
Marty: I can't believe this!
Todd: Yeah, well that makes two of us.
Marty: I can't believe I'm even talking to you! Do you know that less than a year ago -- less than a year ago you and your frat brothers raped me! I bet you don't even remember the date, do you?
Todd: I didn't exactly write it down in my date book, no.
Marty: You know, you said something when we were on the hill. About how you didn't blame me, for hating you.
Todd: Yeah, well, the fire was getting closer; I had to say something to get you --
Marty: No, it was more than that. It was more than that. It was the first time that I've ever heard you admit that you might have done something wrong when you raped me.
Todd: All those months in prison, all that time on the run. Kinda ruins your social life, you know what I mean? Nothing to do -- except think about things.
Marty: What're you saying, Todd? Are you trying to say you're sorry??
Marty: Say it, Todd! I need to hear you say it! Do you have any idea what kind of pain you put me through? Do you still have nightmares about that night? Do you still see Suede's face the night he died??
Todd: No, you know that was an accident. You saw, you were there. He hit me, I hit him back. It was an accident!
Marty: I am sick and tired of your excuses! I need to know if you're capable of feeling sorry!
Todd: You wanna know if I feel things?? You wanna know if the monster feels things? You wanna know if I'm sorry? Yeah, I'm sorry; I'm sorry about a lot of things but most of all, most of all, I'm sorry about the day I was born. I'm sorry I'm gonna spend the rest of my life on the run! But, maybe I should just let the cops catch me and kill me right here! How do you like that idea, hunh?
Marty: They're here! The police are here.
Todd: I gotta go, Marty. You -- I gotta go, you understand right? Hold this. You hold this right here.
Todd – Cause I was inlove with her, she was everything to me, she was all I could see, all that mattered to me and I would have done anything not to lose her.
Viki - You love Marty Saybrooke, what are you delusional?
Todd - Not about this no.
Viki - Then you’re lying.
Todd - I’m not lying, that’s the only truth I have left. I fell in love with her and she’s in love with me.
Viki - stop it
Todd - I love her.
Viki – No, you raped her
Todd – you think I need you to remind me of that, I don’t. What a joke, huh? Same mark, same spot, same crime.
Viki – oh, you can admit that it was a crime but still pretend to call it love.
Todd - She didn’t care how I use to be,
Viki – because you lied to her, Todd.
Todd – No, because she looked at me and she saw who I could be.
Viki – It was a lie.
Todd – Not to her it wasn’t
Viki – Do you hear yourself?
Todd – yes, I do. This didn’t just happen, Viki. Look, Look, Same cut, same place as the scar that branded me before. Remember it reminded everyone who I was and now its back. But I’m afraid the branding went a little deeper this time.
Viki – Do you have any conception of the chaos and pain you’ve caused everybody you know.
Todd – sure I , I hurt everyone I care about, should sound very familiar to you.
Vikki – Victor did not do this, you did it, and you have no one to blame but yourself.
Todd - I fell in love with her
Starr - You kept Coles mom in the dark about who she was, you didnt tell her she had a child at home who loves her and misses her. You didn't even tell her that you were her rapist. What you did to her is so gross, that it is unbelievable to me, I can't, Dad, What?
Todd - I have made some huge mistakes in my life, but I realize that I have to try and fix those mistakes.
Starr - you realized that you were going to get caught.
Todd - no, no, its just because of Marty.
Starr - Just because of Marty? What is that suppose to mean?
Todd - Because of who she was. She's, She's, She's the most incredible woman I've ever met. Starr, she's a, she's made me see that there is good in me. And she's a, made me feel things that I didn't think I could feel again. I mean, of course, kind of silly, huh. Her of all people, the one person I should probably never have feelings for. But I'll tell you this, no matter what you think, no matter what anyone thinks, my relationship with her was what kept me from taking your kid. And I did, I do love her dearly. And I love you more than I could love anyone else in the whole world.
Starr - Then you don't know what love is, please get out of my way.
Todd - Sweetie
Starr - let me go.
