Site Goals:

As a writer, I often find myself scurrying through the internet searching for the writer's guidelines of magazines. Through my searching I often find myself thinking: "I wish there was an index or directory that listed the fiction markets." Now like every other professional writer, I've got the 2006 Writer's Market sitting here along side my computer, and of course I use it every chance I can get. It is a writer's greatest blessing, but there are so many magazines out there that are not listing in it. They only list the top magazines, with tens of thousands of readers, and the nearly extinct and rarely seen high pay of $250 and up for short stories (usually 7,500 words or less). Take Sci-Fi for instance. I can count the Sci-Fi listings in the 2006 Writer's Market on one hand. There are over 200 Sci-Fi magazines, mostly small press, but still, they are out there. Don't even look for horror magazines in the 2006 Writer's Market...they are listed in the Sci-Fi section, so few that they didn't even get their own section, and yet, I've found close to 100 of them by searching Google! Fantasy? Also stuck in Sci-Fi. What about Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and Horror for children and teens? Nope, none, not listed, zip, nada.

Now I'm not saying the 2006 Writer's Market is not great. Fact is I wouldn't be without one. My point is, that while it is the largest, most exhaustive directory for freelance writers, it's also limited top the top markets, the super high paying markets, and needless to say, markets that only accept 1 submission out of every two or three thousand they receive, making it near impossible for first time or new writers to get their foot in the door, let alone published.

So, I came to the conclusion, that if I couldn't find a directory that listed the online websites of magazines that publish fiction, than I'd just have to create one myself. And thus comes to light, yet more pages to add to my already hundreds of page long web site: Space Dock 13,

How to Cruise This Site:

I have divided this site off into seperate catagory lists. All are for fiction short stories (500-7,500 words for most; upto 15,000 for a few). There are two main catagories: by payment to you the writer or by subject matter.

The first catagory: by payment, is divided into three sections:

  • High Pay

(magazines that pay .03¢ per word or more)
  • Low Pay

(magazines that pay less than .03¢ per word)
  • No Pay

(magazines that do not pay with cash)

The second catagory: by subject matter, is currently divided into six sections:

I have tried to keep the lists in alphabetical order and be sure that the links and paymnt prices are up to date. If you should notice a mistake or any broken links; or if you are a writer who has been published in a magazine not listed, which you believe I should add to my every growing lists; or you are the owner of a magazine and you'd like me to list it here; feel free to email me at: xavychup@yahoo.com subject: MARKET FOR WRITERS LIST UPDATE and let me know. Thanks.

What You Will NOT Find Here:

Okay, first off: I'm making this site for my own personal use, and I'm making it a public site, so that other writer's can use it as well. Therefore, seeing how's it's a site initially intended for me, it is going to list markets that I myself use or plan to use in the future. Places I submit work to, along side places I plan to submit work to in the future.

With that in mind, you are going to find sites here, that publish the type of work I write myself. And what exactly is that? Well, I write what could be called "Tales of the Paranormal". In other words: Sci-Fi, Classic Gothic (girl + haunted house + creepy romantic recluse type guy that owns the house), Ghost Stories, Alien Abduction, Ye Olde Classic Fearie Realme (think pre-Victorian evil demonic blood sucking Phookas and Merakian mermaid type stuff you'd except from Bryan Froud -- as a general rule I pretty much hate the modern day cutesy wish granting lovey dovey butterfly winged fairies and dewy-eyed glamorous mermaids of today), Haunted Houses, Mad Scientists, Insane Asylums gone bizerc, talking animals, children’s stories, folk lore, and other similar type stuff.

You will NOT find sites that accept only poetry.

Do not look for webzines, online magazines, or ezines here ~~~ I do not like them, do not read them, will not lower myself to submitting to them. They rarely publish anything of high quality reading. Most ezines I have found are barely above the level of fan fic sites. Only actual print, ink and paper magazines are listed here.

Which brings me to: FanFic or Fan Fiction. Nope, that is not here either. If you are looking for fan fic, than you are in the wrong place, and talking to the wrong person.

As the creator and copyright owner of my own universe, I have my characters designed and act the way I want them to look, talk, and act. My porcupine quills stand on end and shot fire at the mere thought that a fan would maul and mutilate one on my characters to fit their own definition of them. I hate it when fans, create themselves as a character and become the lover of one of my characters. What gives you the right to think that he (she) would see anything to like about you? I know what my characters like and do not like. If I want them in a torrid erotica affair with someone, than I will give them a lover and write about the affair myself.

While it may be good practice for new writers, to write out their fantasies with copyrighted characters... if you are not capable of creating your own characters, than you really have no business pretending to be a writer at all. Writers create. Writers create characters. If you can't create your own characters, you will not get very far as a profesional writer. Fan-Fic for your personal fantasy and writing practice is one thing, and creating your own personal website, with appropriate disclaimers, isn't all that bad, but to publish it and make a mockery of the original writer's intended character traits is not only an outrage, but a copyright infringement that could get you a $25,000 fine and/or 10 or more years in prison.

Think about it this way:

You have created a character that you love deeply. You have poured your heart and soul into designing him. You gave him a home. A career. A family. A lifestyle. A goal. A purpose, etc. He is perfect. Now you write a story about him. You want the world to know how much you love the character you have created. Eureka, the story is published! Better, yet, the world loves him. He becomes an over night hit. You are so proud that the world loves him as much as you do. Than one day you come across a fan-fic site, and shudder, shock, horror! you find that your beloved character has murdered his wife and is in bed with the author of the fanfic story! or Your villain has given up a life of crime and now preaches the Bible as a traveling evangelist. You are shocked. You hurt. Tears in your eyes. You ask yourself: "How could they? How could they take my beautiful perfect character, and turn him into such a monster?" Your heart is broken. You give up writing. You cannot understand how your fans could be so sadistic as to destroy your beloved work of art. Why? Why? Why? You worked so long. You worked so hard. And for what? For this? To sit back and watch as the fans destroy the character you created and turn him into something you never intended him to be? How do you think you'd feel if someone did this to you and a character you created?

You see the problem with fan-fiction? Do you see now why I hate it so much?

That said, I will not promote of list fan fic sites on the site.

I do sometimes write a bit of non-fiction, so a few non-fic sites will prob'ly show up on this site as well.
