I love American Eskimo Dogs. They are beatiful, smart, good natured, fun loving and great with kids. They are snowy white and have beautiful waterfall - like tails, always smiling faces, and the males have a lion like mane when they are fully grown. I love to watch sunsets at the beach or in the mountains, however, I don't live near either. So I get a much more frequent drink of beauty by looking at my gorgeous dogs instead. I find looking at them to be just as rewarding. We have three that are "ours" for keeps. Our Daddy Eskimo is Kodiak. He has two girlfriends, Cutie and Joy. They are all champion bloodline dogs. Kodiak weighs 29 pounds, Cutie is 24 pounds, and Joy is a diminutive 18 pounds. They stay in a nice kennel run out the back door, but get let out to play often with my kids in our fenced in back yard. It is a blast to watch the streaks of white go flashing across the yard when they are playing. We live with them in south Louisiana.
Eskies are not that high on maintenance. Twice a year they shed really heavy for about two weeks. Then they need extra brushing. Other than that they don't shed any more than any other dog. Their coats stay pretty white with just an occasional brushing. I use a whitening shampoo when I feel the need to bathe them. When they do get muddy, I usually just rinse them off and let them dry and they are fine. The best thing for brushing is a rake that I can get at any pet supply store. If you keep up with it a few times a week, it isn't that bad. And most of my dogs love to be brushed. You can almost hear them purr!
American Eskimos used to be called "Spitz". They really aren't sled dogs, they just look like them. They come in standard, toy and miniature. I prefer standards because I have found that toy and miniature versions of most breeds tend to be weaker and more illness prone and just don't live as long. I guess it is because the smaller size is developed by deliberately breeding to the smaller weaker lines of the breed. And since I am more interested in havng long lived healthy pets than I am anything else, I stick with standards.
