I am going to explain everything like you just started using blender!
First open blender and delete the (cube) for dummies "X>Erase selected objects" Then place a (plane) by pressing "Space>Add>Mesh>Plane" then we need to make the (plane) larger do this by pressing "s" till it is covering your camera view.
Then to make this look more real we will subdivide this (plane) by "w>subdevide" do this 3 to 4 times! so that it looks like this
then move some vertexes up or down you can do this by pressing "2" 3 times then edit them till you think it looks right here is what mine looks like
To smooth the edges right now so it does not look like a lot of triangles and squares we need to press "F9" then in the bottom button boxes you should press "set smoot" make sure that all your vertexes that you want smoothed are selected then press "set smoot" represented in this image
Then we need to select the area that we want to be textured! make sure that you are in object mode then press "F" you are now in UV Face select to make this simpler we will need an devision so we can view 2 different things! First move the mouse cursor to the top of the screen right below the buttons you will get an expand button "R Click>Split Area" it looks like this
Then choose where you want the split then "L click" on the left side of the screen in the bottom right click on "windows type>UV Image editor" shown here
Make sure that your (squares) or (plane) is pinkish looking then click in the uv image editor screen "Image>Open" i used this texture but you can use any REPEATING texture!
you should see no difference because we need to be in the texture mode
then you should see your texture but if you try to render it it will still be an gray model to fix this press "F5" that will take you to shading buttons in there find "add new" or look here
Then click on "TexFace" here
Press "F12" to render and you have beautiful textures!
Here is what mine turned out looking like :)
