CAN YOU AFFORD NOT TO HIRE A CONSULTANT?
Non-profit organizations have always struggle with maintaining adequate personnel and other resources necessary to serve their clients. Their incomes are based on grants and fundraising, which are not long term resources. Organizations are forced to operate on a grant cycle and sometimes several different grant cycles. Many cannot afford to retain the personnel that work on a particular grant after the grant period has ended and in between the time that they will receive their next award or continuation of that grant. This situation causes anxiety for both the agency and the employee. I know, because I have been on both sides of that coin. How can you prevent interruption of operations if your entire organization operates on grant funding and fundraising? It is called straddle your resources and have several grants that support the same project. I know it is hard enough to find funding for that one project, let alone multiple funding sources for the same project. I guess if you had a grant writer on staff this would not be so impossible. However, you have program staff and managers (that manage several different programs and budgets) searching for funding and preparing the grants. Oh, you say you cannot afford to hire staff JUST to search for and prepare grants? I understand, because to employ an experienced grant writer, with no other duties, could cost an agency over $92,950 per year with salaries, indirect costs, and fringe benefits. The solution: agencies will find that it is much less expensive to outsource the work to an experienced consultant, rather than put someone on the payroll.
Secondly, due to the current economic crisis (and even prior to these current times) non-profit organizations have struggled to maintain current levels of funding and programming to serve their target populations. Most recently, foundations, state agencies, and other funders are decreasing the availability of funding due to their own budget restraints and incomes. More detailed application guidelines and restrictions for use of funds have been applied to most grant opportunities, because of the limited amount of funds available to offer. When the resources get scarce, those in control of the dollars get more particular of who they give their money to and how it is spent. Foundations are accountable to their donors and state and local agencies are accountable to the tax payers. For these reasons and those above, organizations will need to be even more prepared and positioned to respond to grant opportunities, which would mean having dedicated staff to finding grant opportunities. Non-profit organizations typically lack the staff resources to dedicate to finding grant opportunities, prepare grant applications, and to develop and improve their programs.
Lastly, many businesses including non-profit organizations have streamlined their operations and have done more with decreased staff capacity. This is another reason agencies may want to hire a consultant specifically for the purposes of grant writing and program development. When you find a consultant that has fees and services that are geared to meet the needs of a non-profit organization and not a for-profit corporation - you have it made. Let me introduce you to that consultant company:
