New Season, Still the greatest 5-a-side team in existence |
|
|
Hello! You're on the homepage of the hottest thing to hit Thornbury since Tesco opened. It's been a while since this website was last updated, so theres alot of things to mention. Firstly, J.R.'s One Shot Wonders finished as Knockout Cup runners-up and Division Two Champions last season, a fact made somewhat less impressive by the fact that Division Two no longer exists. In any case, we're now in Division One, and at the time of writing, in 2nd place and with the best goal difference. And on top of that, we got to the Area Finals last season (just don't mention to any one that we lost every game we played). Anyway, you can clearly see that we, the mighty J.R.'s One Shot Wonders, are still the finest 5-a-side football team on the face of the planet, and you can celebrate the fact by basking in the new rumours, match reports and statistics that will be appearing on this site in the near future!

Team History: From bumbling beginnings |
|
|
J.R.'s One Shot Wonders began with four young men, desperate to make
their mark on the world. 'How shall we do this?', they screamed at each
other, until several face slappings silenced them. The answer was
simple. They created their own 5-a-side team, to take on the world
through the force of amatuer football. But there were problems. They
were unnamed, they had no league to play in, they had no kit and they
didn't even have 5 players. But this did not deter them.
Future Team Secretary Arron set to work on gaining a place for the team
in the prestigous Thornbury Leisure Centre 5-a-side league. Almost
immediately, a miracle occured. A current team were controversially
booted out of the league because they wern't turning up. Surely an act
of god! Arron was contacted by the Leisure Centre and BOSCH!, the team
had their first 3 fixtures, filling in in Division 1. The team were
optimistic at making it in the big time. They speculated that they
might be able to save the team they had taken over from relegation by
winning 2 of their last 3 games, of which one was against top of the
league.
Still, they had no kit. In a last minute bid for cheap kit for the
whole team, they visited the Sports Soccer store in Bristol, which was
closing down. But due to a combination of bitter dispute over the
colour of the kit and the fact that most of the team only had a tenner
from their parents, the team had to settle for a kit which looked like
it was patterned with sequins. Evidence that sacrifices were being
made..................
Work begun to recruit players to the team in time for the first game.
Jess Tuck was quickly signed up, with the promise that the referees
would not notice the high amount of players he would be injuring. A
friend of his, Sam, was also recruited and Ash said his stepdad would
play. The team were thrilled.
However, the team's existence did not get off to a good start. Playing
under the unwanted name 'The Gladiators', the team began the first game
against Kenetic Plc. with Jess suffering from an injury. A poor first
half for our team saw Team Captain Chambers score an own goal, with
only 2 Ash Tuck strikes providing any consolation. However, the second
half saw an inspiring performance from the Gladiators that resulted in
a stunner from Dan Boulton. Under pressure on the edge of the
oppositions area, Dan fired a cross into the ground with deceptively
low power, cunningly tricking the goalkeeper as he saw the the bouncing
ball trickle under his grasp. The team cheered, the opposition gazed in
awe, the crowd swooned. However, the revival was not to be, as The
Gladiators were already 10 goals down. The team were forced to withdraw
to the drawing board, as they needed to win the final two games to
survive, and the next game was against the team The Gladiators were
fighting with for survival, the Seven Amigos..................
