Background
Tsunomaru was the childhood friend of Kazemaru. Both of them having been born of reputable ninja clans in Tsukigakure (月隠れ; Hidden Moon Village), the two were selected to enroll as shinobi of the village. The two of them, as children, practiced their martial arts on one another, Tsunomaru favoring a wooden greatsword against Kazemaru's quarterstaff. Though they were near equals and their sparring matches went on for many minutes before either scored a hit, that hit was attributed to Kazemaru most of the time. However, at a relatively young age, Kazemaru's family fell into the disfavor of the aristocracy and he was forced to flee the country, leaving Tsunomaru relatively alone. This hardly fazed him, though, as he continued to hone his skills and at last entered the ninja academy of Tsukigakure. And as Tsunomaru began to take on the monastic life of a shinobi, having much more time to meditate on his own abilities, he discovered a latent psionic flare, which served only to augment his ninjutsu. He found that he had a much easier time manipulating elemental energies than most of his classmates, who resorted to using the traditional magic of ninjutsu, and soon rose to the top of his class. As a genin (下忍; agent/soldier ninja), Tsunomaru used his ability to synthesize poison to great effect in a number of espionage and combat-related missions. Eventually, he was promoted to chuunin (中忍; mid-level team leader), and he made his first foray into the west, accompanying a group of adventurers as they attempted a foray into the infamous Tomb of Horrors, which amounted to a literal death trap. After witnessing one of his comrades being disintegrated crotch-first, Tsunomaru perceived that it would not be wise to continue this mission and returned to Tsukigakure. Some time later, he received a letter from Kazemaru that he would be returning to Tsukigakure in disguise. They met up in the wilderness, and Tsunomaru welcomed his old friend, who had been much changed by his lengthy stay in the western lands. They trained together in the ancient forest training grounds outside the village for some time, and later rescued the town from an invasion of ogre mages. While the anonymous fighter whom only Tsunomaru knew to be Kazemaru accepted many accolades for his triumph, Tsunomaru lurked in the shadows rather than face the public, as he had been taught at the academy. In fact, he had disappeared entirely before Kazemaru left town once again, though this time with a train of followers. Tsunomaru continued on in the service of Tsukigakure for a while longer, and was called upon for his most important mission yet: he was to lead a force of spies in the scouting of the western city of Tazaria, as the armies of the Scorpion lands were soon to march against it. However, as he was skulking about the city by night, he learned that Kazemaru was lying comatose at a local temple. He crept into the temple to find Shizuko, the commander of Kazemaru's loyal troops, guarding him. He approached her, offering to abandon his mission against Tazaria in favor of helping to restore his best friend to full capacity. After that, he set about gathering the funds necessary for the first steps of magical aid, joining himself to the same group who had just trounced his own army. Having recently amassed sufficient wealth, he and Shizuko now seek the powerful magics necessary for bringing Kazemaru's soul back to his body. He is currently 25.

Personality
Tsunomaru has always had somewhat of an inferiority complex. He was always just a little bit behind Kazemaru, who was after all a year older, but the that such a small gap was insurmountable for as long as they were together growing up was a constant trouble on his mind after they were separated. Even though he was the best at the ninja academy, Tsunomaru was still constantly troubled by the fact that he still couldn't prove that he was better than Kazemaru. He foolishly missed his chance during their training expedition, and then finally when he would have another, he found his old rival hardly better than dead. As such, Tsunomaru is motivated to restore him out of a desire to fight him once more rather than for any bond of friendship. Yet he sees his abdication as his final failure as a shinobi of Tsukigakure, and desires not ever to return, if not out of fear of punishment then out of fear of disgrace. He is in deep conflict at this point, though: with his career as a shinobi over, he has nothing to live for but himself, but he sees some respectable purpose in reviving Kazemaru as a friend and not nothing more than a rival. Only time will tell which side will win him over in the end.
