Background
Back when Harek's beard was only pushing six inches, his clan of deep dwarves was beset by a dreadful plight. His race had always bitterly contested their subterranean territory with the wicked illithid race, but when a sudden influx of the mind flayers bolstered their ranks, the Mindstalkers found themselves hopelessly outmatched, and the dwarves were routed. Yet the mind flayers were not content to have won the battle. They pursued Harek's family as far as their homes. When his noble father, Harek the Elder, rushed home, he instructed Harek to flee from the caves with all his speed while his parents defended their dwelling, stalling the illithids to give Harek a chance to escape. But it wasn't long before Harek found himself chased by his own parents. In the end, he had to kill them just to save himself, though he also saw this as mercy to his family, saving them from ages of torturous servitude at the hands of their illithid overlords. Harek now wanders the bright world under the sun, searching for the strength to return home. He is currently 65 years old.

Personality
Harek Mindstalker is consumed by a burning passion, the desire to personally destroy the illithid race. His hatred for mind flayers outmaches even that of his ancestors, who had feuded with them for generations, because of the personal torture he had to bear. Harek takes pride in using the weapons his father taught him to make--the same father whom he was forced to kill--against illithids, and dreams of the day when his urgrosh will bite into those vile tentacles. Compared to most dwarves, Harek is particularly grim and characteristically antisocial, though he harbors no specific xenophobia against any but the illithids, and to a lesser extent giants and goblinoids, after the fashion of all dwarves. Harek is training in the methods of the illithid slayer, an elite psionic corps that uses the mind flayers' favored sort of abilities against them.
