The club under the name of Cumbernauld A.W.C was formed in 1969 by Mike Roles and his wife Evelyn. The club's first Scottish Champion was Michael Cavanagh, (current British team coach) at 5 stones in May 1970. Michael won the 1971 British Championships with Brian King at 6 Stone and Bobby McLucas at 6 and a half stone. In 1973 Stevie McKeown (Current Tryst O.C.W Head Coach) won his first Scottish Championship at 4 stone. In 1978 saw Bobby McLucas (74kgs) become Cumbernauld's first wrestler to compete at the Commonwealth games, travelling to Edmonton, Canada. In 1982, Michael Cavanagh competed at 68kgs in the Commonwealth games in Brisbane, Australia. Cumbernauld A.W.C was able to send Dave Connelly (52kgs) and Paul Nedley (57kgs) to Victoria in Canada. 3 Cumbernauld wrestlers took part in the 1986 Commonwealth games: Dave Connelly (48kgs), Paul Nedley (57kgs) and Brian Miller (62kgs), with Dave winning Bronze in Edinburgh. In 1987 the club was reconstituted with a name change to Tryst A.W.C (Now O.W.C) the club's backbone was Stevie McKeown & Brian Miller (coaches), Martin Airlie (Secretary), Anne Campbell (Treasurer) & Ian Miller (President). Wrestling was once again established in Cumbernauld, the main coaches remained unchanged until Ian Campbell & Eddie McArdle came on board 8 years later. In 2002 Stevie Mckeown competed in the Commonwealth Games in Manchester at 74kgs. The current successful line up comprises of Stevie still at the helm as head coach. Recently Cameron Marshall resigned as chairman and Joe Boyle also left, Currently Claire McAinsh and Helen are acting Secretary with Stevie McKeown Acting Chairman and Laura Murdoch - Tryst Lions Webmaster. The Tryst Lions O.W.C are growing from strength to strength and have rapidly regained their reputation for being one of the strongest teams in British wrestling today. The success can mainly be attributed to the previous Grassroots programme in our local schools. The standard of wrestling has improved vastly producing success. In 2002 the club produced 4 British Champions; Finlay Marshall, Robert Boyle, Scott McDaid and Kieran Malone. It was Roberts second year as British Champion and Finaly's fifth consecutive British, English & Scottish championship Gold medals. Finlay has also won 3 major international Golds in France, Belgium & Germany and maintained his place in the British squad. Finlay recently left the club to study physiotherapy, Biology and wresting at University in Vancouver, Canada. In 2004/2005 Callum Steel was nominated for Junior Sports personality of the year with Stevie Mckeown winning the Local Services to Sport Award. The club currently has 9 Scottish Champions. |
