Bayonet: a large knife attached to the end of a gun so if the soldier should encounter some close enemies, he can get rid of them by using the knife, it could also be used to mantain a low profile if you were trying to be stealthy.

Machine Gun: a rapidly firing weapon which sacrifices accuracy for brute power, this was usually a stationary weapon and would be located in pillboxes for maximum cover from explosions and incoming fire

Mustard Gas: this weapon of chemical warfare was first used effectively at Ypres and was a very effective weapon against the unprepared allied soldiers. It was also known as chlorine gas and when the wind was right, the Germans were able to send the gas into the allied trenches and choke them to death. It was outlawed for the second world war. (see weapons for more info)

No mans land: the area between the two enemies trenches with barbwire entaglements, people who ventured out here did not last very long.

Periscope: this was used to look out of the trenches to see if there were any incoming troops or tanks

Pillbox: a cement base where a single soldier and a 50 calibre machine gun would be located. There was a thin opening where the soldier could spray the powerful bullets onto the battlefield.

Rifle: a companion gun to the machine gun, these were traditonally equipped with scopes and were used for long range shots, the bayonnet on the gun would be used as a last resort if the gun ran out of ammo, or if he encountered a close enemy.

Trench Foot: a condition which soldiers who lived in trenches were prone to catching. This was very common in the winter months. (see diseases for more info)

Trench Mortar: a projectile which was launched from within the trenches, they were not very effective weapons because it took a lucky shot to land one inside of a trench. (see weapons page more info)

Trench Mouth: a condition that soldiers would get if their mouth became unsanitary (see diseases for more info)

Trench Warfare: warfare in which the opposing forces attack and counterattack from a relatively permanent system of trenches protected by barbed-wire entanglements. (see idea behind trench warfare for more info)
