Designing the perfect vivarium is all about creating the perfect micro-habitat to meet all of your animal's needs. The following section provides all of the questions you need to answer in order to create the perfect vivarium.
Make a Bromeliad planter
Sometimes it is impractical to permanently plant a tank, but plastic and terracotta plant pots can be unsightly in a nicely decorated vivarium. This planter, made from a natural bromeliad stump makes a simple and attractive way to display plants in the vivarium.
1. Purchase a suitably sized bromeliad stump from a website, such as http://www.pollywog.co.uk/
2. Take a plastic plant pot that is appropriately sized for your bromeliad stump, and cut as in the photographs below
3. Take the bottom section of your plant pot, and fit it inside the bottom of your bromeliad stump. This may take some work and trimming to get a good fit. If your plant pot does not fit snuggly, you can use aquarium-safe silicone to secure it in place
4. Take the plant you intend to use, and gently remove as much of the dirt as possible without damaging the roots. Put the removed dirt into the planter, and plant the plant into the bromeliad. Firm the plant into place and if necessary, add more dirt to top it up and keep secure 5. Place the planter in a good place in the vivarium and enjoy!
