DRACULA: UNBOUND

“Evil never dies”

Book and Lyrics by Joseph Traynor

Music by Kyle Ukes

Based upon characters created by Bram Stoker

Synopsis

Evil never dies they say. They were right. Forces are at work in Transylvania. Two men with one agenda: To bring the prince of darkness back to life. If they succeed Dracula will be unleashed, and the rivers and oceans of the world will flow with blood!

INTRODUCTION

I remember seeing “The horror of Dracula” as a kid. For those unfamiliar with this version it was the 1958 remake from Hammer Horror starring Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing. It was an experience I will never forget. It was a dark, erotic, gothic film, full of as much action set pieces as it was blood.

I’ll never forget the climax with Van Helsing running along a dining table and tearing the curtains down to expose his nemesis, Dracula to the ray’s of the sun. Spectacular!

When it came to writing “Dracula: Unbound” (and its two companion pieces “The Blood of Dracula” and “Dracula: Rebirth”) I wanted to bring the spirit of the best vampire films to the stage, to write something gothic, frightening, romantic, exciting.

Essentially my goal with this musical is to make the audience feel what I felt when I first saw the Dracula films of Universal and Hammer Horror: Frightened, excited…and create an unquenchable thirst for blood!

ABOUT THE COMPOSER

Age 20, Kyle Ukes is finishing up his sophomore year as a music composition major at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Being accepted to the advanced undergraduate program at UCSB, the College of Creative Studies (CCS), upon admission, Kyle has been able to focus on his music from day one with the compositional guidance of Dr. Jeremy Haladyna

In the past, Kyle has orchestrated many musicals for his local high school and middle school. “Dracula: Unbound” is Kyle’s second musical project where he actually composed the music. The first being the dramatic musical “The Monsters in Us.” Having much practice in writing for dark musicals in the past, “Dracula: Unbound” seemed to be a project right up his alley. His other compositions of small and large ensembles have won him many awards and scholarships adding up to around two thousand dollars

Kyle is highly influenced by the composers of the necromanticism and expressionism eras and their ideals. Most of the pieces Kyle writes are inspired by or interpret works of literature
