Training a Young Horse

News and Updates

September - We are finished competing for the year.  I am looking forward to some down time to just enjoy the fall and not be always planning for the next show.

August Updates  - Molly has continued to shine at her events even in the RAIN!!!

Belvoir Horse Trials - Entry 2nd place

It rained all day and I mean all day!  We had rain for all three phases.  We had the best dressage test EVER resulting in 24 penalties or 84%.  We had no faults in stadium. It was really raining on cross country and we had one minor slide by which resulted in 20 jumping faults and some time faults. BUT because our dressage test was so good we place 2nd in the division even in the rain and with the jumping faults.

Irish Creek Combined Training - Pre-Training 1st place

We decided to upgrade to the next level at the Irish Creek combine which includes the Dressage and Show Jumping but no Cross Country.  Molly again was a super star and we placed first in the division.  We had an expectional dressage score of 31.5 penalties and only one rail down in stadium to finish on only 35.5 penalties.  The next closest score was in the high 40's.

No major updates for Amherst this month.  He is out with his girls now for all day turn out.  He still follows me around like a puppy dog in the field.  And amazing enough a horse size halter fits him...I think he may be a big boy!

Skittles is a mom with three baby kittens.  Shirley and I were lucky enough to see them once before she moved them to a spot behind the hay where I can not get to them.  They are very cute!

Precious had a baby colt named Phalon.  Check out Shirley's link below for pictures and details.

Maragold has been started.  Shirley has done an excellent job on her ground work and we have started the backing process this past week.  She is so accepting and relaxed about the process.

A short glimpse of what the future holds for Amherst...Enjoy!

How it all started.....

A couple of years ago I decided I should start looking for a new project and equine partner. My goal was to find a horse with some experience that I could train in the sport of 3 Day Eventing.  I have a 23 yr old Thoroughbred (Wills) that enhanced my skills in this discipline.  We successfully competed up to Training level before he semi retired.

A friend and I spent the better part of the summer of 2006 and what felt like all over Ontario looking for that perfect horse. The criteria was that the horse was a gelding, backed, preferrably 5-7 yrs old with some eventing experience.  You may ask, why is this important?  While just over a year ago I did end up finding a new horse that I thought would be a perfect partner.  This special horse was at a breeder almost in my backyard, Clear-enk Stables located in Rockwood. My new partner was 3 1/2 yrs old, not backed and a MARE to boot. Do you think it was a little off my original criteria?  Well it was the best decision I could have made, Amelie aka Molly has been an amazing horse, very willing and easy to train.

I decided to create this website to share my experience training a young horse from basically scratch. I have to admit that I never thought I would be in this position but if you find the right horse it can be very enjoyable.  So enjoyable in fact, that I recently purchased her full brother and he is ONLY 8 months old.  Yes, I will have my gelding afterall and if he is anything like his sister he will be a fantastic partner in whatever discipline we decide to do.
