About
The Therapeutic Riding Association for Challenged Kids (T.R.A.C.K.) offers horseback riding programs for challenged children throughout Durham Region and the neighbouring communities. The programs serve developmentally delayed, learning disabled, and physically handicapped children and young adults. Anyone can refer a child to T.R.A.C.K. and participation in the program is not restricted by region or area of residence. T.R.A.C.K. began operation in the spring of 1987 and was granted charible status in November of 1991. Parents pay a nominal amount towards instructor fees and for the use of the horses and facilities. The balance of the costs are met through donations and fundraising. Each week children of all ages come to Springwood Stables in Uxbridge, Ontario to ride with T.R.A.C.K. Some come as part of a day-time school program, while others come in the evening with their parents proudly watching. Each child brings his or her own special challenges, yet each gets up on a horse and rides. When a child is accepted into the program, the Instructor will complete a rider profile. This profile will establish the rider's individual needs and the type of specializedd equipment that may be necessary. Initially, the Instructor may contact the child's occupational therapist and/or physiotherapist for consultation in order to develop a therapy program which would complement any goals that have already been established. A strong emphasis is placed on creating a high level of motivation and self-esteem. Therapeutic riding is an unusual acivity requiring very special skills, facilities and equipment, however, the logistical challenges of running the program are more than justified by the impressive array of physical, psychological, and social benefits to the children. Of course, the horses themselves are an integral part of the program. To ensure effectiveness and safety, these animals must be patient, steady, and kind. They must also possess the physical fitness to caryy dead weight and maintain a steady even gait, while remaining fresh and enthused about their special job. The frenetic pace and impersonal character of our modern society is causing increasing numbers of Canadians to seek a more direct contact with the natural world. T.R.A.C.K.'s programs offer a realistic and beneficial avenue for challenged kids to participate in the important connection with animals, nature and the "great outdoors." |
