Perishable produce should be carefully cleaned Fruits and
vegetables which cannot be peeled and washed, such as grapes, cabbage and
lettuce should be avoided unless one is willing to wash each individual leaf
or grape carefully and then immerse in boiling water. Generally speaking, it
is safest never to eat raw food the preparation of which one has not
supervised, no matter how tempting it appears. Do not loosen ice cubes from the tray under the tap,
but instead let them set out a few minutes for loosening. When travelling, it
is advisable to drop an iodine tablet (or 7-8 drops of Lugol's iodine to a
quart of water) into doubtful water, and wait 20 minutes before consumption.
On the road, rely upon tea, coffee, beer or soft drinks; any bottled beverage
is preferable to unboiled water.
Pasteurized milk is sold throughout the city; however, it is rarely used
without repasteurization. The bacteria in milk rises rapidly
(even though pasteurized) unless the milk is kept at a low temperature;
unrefrigerated delivery vehicles and inadequate refrigeration renders the milk
unsafe for drinking cold from the bottle.
