The Edmonton Oilers have made a trade on September 18th 2003
Edmonton Oilers have dealt Ethan Moreau to Calgary for prospect Darren Lynch (right winger) GM Aly Kaba had this to say about the trade "Ethan Moreau became expendable because of the talent we have in the AHL that are ready to step into the NHL, we have a lot of young players in the AHL that have been waiting a couple years to crack the NHL team, and it would hurt there development if we let them rot in the AHL, we still have a coupleother players that we want to bring up, but it's not neccesary at this time because they can still learn a bit more with our AHL affiliate the Toronto Road Runners. Ethan's salary of 1.6 million/year was a part of the reason we dealt him but it wasn't the major reason, we have a lot of depth at left-wing and we want to give the young guys the opportunity they've earned, deserved and have waited for. In aquiring Darren Lynch, a right winger we have added a solid prospect to our team, and Darren is going to be playing with his cousin Doug Lynch (who is older by 3 months & 3 days) with the Toronto Road Runners this upcoming season. Doug & Darren Lynch are both excited to be playing on the same team for once."
The Edmonton Oilers have made 2 more trades on September 19th 2003
Oilers dealt Left winger Jason Chimera to the Montreal Canadiens for Centre Jan Bulis & Montreal's 3rd rd 2004 pick.
GM Aly Kaba had this to say "Jason was part of our plan for this season, but this deal was just too good to pass up, Chimera is a talented leftwinger, who came on strong last season, Jan Bulis is a solid centre who scored 40 pts in 82 games last season with the Habs, and will be a nice fit in our lineup, we also recieve a 3rd rd pick which I couldn't say no to, not very often do you get a offer like this from another GM, we're giving up a young talented left-winger, but we're getting a young, more talented, more experienced player + a 3rd rd. pick, I wish the best of luck to Jason Chimera with his new team."
Edmonton Oilers Dealt Goalie Tommy Salo, Edmonton's 1st rd 2004 pick & Edmonton's 3rd rd 2005 pick to St. Louis for Goalie Brent Johnson & prospect Shawn Belle.
GM Aly Kaba had this to say "We have done what we wanted to do, we trimmed payroll by 2.8 million with this trade alone, aquired a talented goalie who is younger, cheaper & bigger then Tommy Salo, he's a proven #1 goalie that can play really well consistently, we also improved our future by aquiring defenceman Shawn Belle, he's more of defensive d-man, who's got pretty good size at 6'2 211 lbs. Shawn Belle is an Edmonton native, a very solid d-man and we are ecstatic to have aquired him, he was as big a part of this trade for us as Brent Johnson was."
September 23rd 2003. The Oilers have made a trade with Columbus Blue Jackets The Edmonton Oilers dealt AHL d-men Bobby Allen, Marc-Andre Bergeron, & AHL forward Brad Winchester to the Columbus Blue Jackets for prospect Dimitri Komaschev & Columbus' 3rd rd 2004 pick.
GM Aly Kaba had this to say "we had an abundance of defenceman & forwards on the farm team, and we needed to deal a couple defenceman & a forward in order to give the players in our system quality ice time to develop into NHL players. Dimitri Komaschev is a big defenceman and will intimidates the other teams players, he's got great skating ability and will be a force on defence, he'll be a top 4 d-man for us someday. and a 3rd rd pick gives us more depth for the future and we are very pleased with this deal."
September 25th 2003 The Edmonton Oilers have traded Edmontons 4th rd pick in 2004 & 4th rd pick in 2005 to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for forward Tie Domi & Defenceman Wade Belak. GM Aly Kaba had this to say "Tie Domi is a very physical player that intimidates the other team, with the addition of Domi that gives us 2 of the best fighters in the league, (Georges Laraque & Tie Domi), Wade Belak gives us depth on defence, he's a strong, physical defenceman that can also drop the gloves and give a good fight. Before this trade we had a team that mostly was pretty small and not very strong, with these 2 players, we now have a team that will intimidate the other teams in the league, Domi, Laraque, Belak. Wade Belak also gives us more size on defence, at 6'4 225 lbs., which means 5 of our 6 d-man are 6'3 and bigger, our other defenceman, Steve Staios is our smallest starting defenceman at 6'1 200 lbs. Nobody will mess withour team and get away with it."
October 1st 2003 Edmonton Oilers have dealt defenceman Francis Nault to Columbus' for a 5th rd 2005 pick
October 9th 2003 Edmonton Oilers have dealt centre Jan Bulis to the Colorado Avalanche for prospect defenceman David Lifton
GM Aly Kaba had this to say "when we aquired Tie Domi from the Leafs' we were left with too many forwards, Jan Bulis became expendable & the Av's were looking for a offensive forward. David Lifton is a very solid prospect, drafted in the 2nd rd in 2003, he's got some size at 6'2, 201 lbs. he's a physical defenceman that could be a top 4 d-man for us someday, we are very excited to have aquired David, as he will solidfy our future defensive corpse.
In a seprate trade just a few minutes after, the Edmonton Oilers dealt defenceman Steve Staios, Columbus' 3rd rd 2004 pick & Edmontons 3rd rd 2004 pick to Colorado for Montreals 1st rd 2004 pick.
GM Aly Kaba had this to say "We have good depth at defence, and we were slightly overbudget, this trade does 2 things, gives us a good pick in the 2004 entry draft, & it clears out some salary, although Steve Staios was a fan favorite and one of our most solid and most consistent players on our team, this trade is best for the organization, though we lost a great defenceman and a great leader and dealt a couple 3rd rd picks we are getting a first rd pick in a draft in which there is some awesome talent. We did lose depth, but we had depth we could deal, and it gives our younger defenceman a chance to step in sooner and develop earlier and gain valuable NHL experience. I realize a lot of fans are unhappy to see Steve go, and it was really hard to deal him, he's been a huge part of our team and has done numerous community work the past few years and we are grateful for what he's done for the team as well as the community, we wish Steve Staios the best of luck in Colorado.
October 12th 2003.. the Edmonton Oilers have dealt Shawn Horcoff to the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for Artem Chubarov & Vancouver's 3rd rd pick in 2004. GM Aly Kaba had this to say "though Horc (Shawn Horcoff) had a break out season for us last year, notching 33 pts, we feel Artem Chubarov can fill Horcoff's spot just as good, Chubarov is a very good defensive player, and is younger and also a little cheaper then Horc. The 3rd rd pick we can use to aquire a pretty good prospect and will give us added depth in the future. This is a good trade for both teams, and we wish Shawn Horcoff all the best with the Canucks organization."
October 12th 2003 The Edmonton Oilers have made a blockbuster trade tonight, aquiring Jarome Iginla & Calgarys 2nd rd 2004 pick in exchange for Ryan Smyth & prospects Michael Henrich & Alexei Mikhnov. GM Aly Kaba had this to say "We are happy with the trade, and although Ryan Smyth was a very good player for us, and gave us 110% every practice, every game, every day, this trade makes us a better team and we feel this can put us over the top. Iginla is a proven scorer, and led the league in goals & pts a couple years ago, last year was a tough year for him with injuries, but we really feel this year Iginla can prove to everyone that he's an elite player and can be a top 5 player in the leauge. We will start talking to Jarome Iginla about a long-term contract extension, we are looking to sign him to a long-term deal so we can keep him in an Oiler uniform for years to come. We talked to Jarome Iginla and he said he's very ecstatic to be in his hometown, and he wants to be here for the long-term, he also went on to say it's a dream come true for him to be on the Edmonton Oilers."
October 19th 2003 The Edmonton Oilers have dealt goaltender Ty Conklin to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for Fred Brathwaite. GM Aly Kaba said "We're getting a more experienced NHL goalie, which hopefully will push Brent Johnson to be the best goalie he can be because he knows that if he doesn't do well then he'll be riding the bench, Brent Johnson was pleased to be reunited again with Fred Brathwaite, they were the goaltending duo in St. Louis just a couple years ago, and now they are the goaltending duo in Edmonton. Fred Brathwaite is not a stranger to Edmonton he was here from the 1993/1994 season through 1995/1996 season"
The Edmonton Oilers have traded Sergei Berezin to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for Steve Webb in a trade of UFA signings from this past summer. Steve Webb signed a 4 year deal with the Avalanche worth $750,000/year, while the Edmonton Oilers had signed Sergei Berezin to a 1 year deal worth 2 million, plus a team option for a 2nd year. GM Aly Kaba had this to say "We've been eyeing Steve Webb the last couple of years when he was with the NYI, when we decided to try and sign Steve Webb, we were a little late as he had just signed with the Colorado Avalanche, Steve Webb is a great defensive player, very feisty and sticks up for his teammates, not an offensive threat, but very sound defensively, we are excited to have Steve Webb with us and we hope that he's just as happy to be here."
The Edmonton Oilers later that night, made another deal with the Av's, dealing defencemen Kari Haakana & Mikko Luoma to Colorado in exchange for Edmonton's 3rd rd 2004 pick, which Colorado aquired in a deal involving Steve Staios about 2 weeks ago.

We are very pleased to have aquired Mark Messier, he will obviously bring tonnes of leadership & experience to this dressing room, & he has been named our new captain for the remainder of this season. I talked to Messier right after the deal was struck and he seemed really happy to be back in Edmonton, & to be able to finish his career here."
November 9th 2003 The Edmonton Oilers have dealt defenceman Jason York & Edmonton's 2nd rd 2004 pick to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for RW Joffrey Lupul. GM Aly Kaba had this to say "Joffrey is a talented young player that will be a key player in our future, in Joffrey Lupul we have a player who will be a very solid scoring threat on our top 2 lines someday. Joffrey will play the rest of this year with the Medicine Hat Tigers of the WHL, then next season will be playing with the Toronto RoadRunners of the AHL, he'll be joined by a few other promising young prospects, the likes of Marc-Antoine Pouliot, Jeff-Drouin Deslauriers & Shawn Belle to name a few. Joffrey Lupul is from Edmonton, has good size and is considered to be the next Mike Bossy, we will not put a lot of pressure on him as we have a lot of fine talent within our system & currently on our team & we have a very bright future ahead, we have nothing but great expectations for our hockey club, & the fans also have high expectations of our hockey club, and we will deliver, this trade ensured that even more."
November 21st 2003
Edmonton Oilers hereby agrees to trade Kip Miller, Edmonton’s 3rd rd 2004 pick & Edmonton's 5th rd pick in 2005 to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for prospects John Boychuk, David Svagrovsky & Brad Richardson. GM Aly Kaba had this to say "We are very pleased with this deal. we are getting 3 promising young prospects, who are all looking very good in juniors so far & we are very excited to have all 3 of them in our organization.
John Boychuk is a very solid d-man has 1 goal & 3 assists in 10 games so far with the Moose Jaw Warriors of the WHL, he's a great Canadian kid with loads of potential, drafted in the 2nd rd by Colorado, has a good frame at 6'2 205 lbs, he can contribute offensively but also plays very sound defensively, we've got a lot of promising young defenceman, John Boychuk is going to be a star someday.
Brad Richardson is a centre, a 5th rd pick of the Colorado Avalanche, born in Canada, Brad has really broke out in juniors last year & has been overlooked a lot, last season with the Owen Sound Attack (OHL) he established career highs in goals, assists, points & PIM with 27 goals, 40 assists, 67 pts & added 54 PIM. In 9 games so far this season with Owen Sound he has 7 goals & 5 assists for 12 pts with 4 PIM & a +9 rating, he's just 18 years old, already in his 3rd season in juniors, he's a solid pick up & should have a great career in the NHL, his size is a reason he's been overlooked at just 5'11 178 lbs but has the hockey smarts to overcome his small size. David Svagrovsky born in the Czech. Republic is a young talented Right Winger, at 6'3 205 lbs. he can really dominate a game. He's a 4th rd pick of the Av's, played 68 games with the Seattle Thunderbirds last year, reacording 17 goals & 25 assists for 42 pts. also had 47 PIM, in his first season of juniors. In 11 games this season, his 2nd year of juniors, he has already scored 11 goals, recorded 7 assists for 18 pts in just 11 games, this kid keeps getting better every game & should have a solid future ahead of him.
