When thinking of buying a tortoise, it is important to research their requirements first. Owning a tortoise should be a lifeterm commitment, and a lot of thought should be given to both the tortoise's immediate and long-term needs.
I hear many very sad stories of new keepers who buy their tortoise from a commercial outlets - like garden centres and pet shops. I have in the past visited some of these commercial outlets and listened to the horrendous innacurate information they tell potential unknowing customers. New owners are given inappropriate advice, but do not discover this until much later on when the tortoise shows signs of ill health. For that reason I encourage prospective owners to buy their tortoise from experienced UK breeders and keepers who will give out good, accurate information on husbandry and who usually provide ongoing and long-term care advice.
A list of respected and reputable breeders of genuine UK captive bred tortoises can be found on the Tortoise Protection Group web site. Their site is dedicated to helping ensure the survival of tortoises in the wild by campaigning for a ban on the importation of tortoises for the commercial pet trade, and to promote high standards of husbandry to tortoise keepers in the UK.
I recommend you visit this site for accurate and detailed information. - http://www.tortoise-protection-group.org.uk/site/1.asp

“Illegal tortoise trade is happening in Britain” (DEFRA, 2004)
An estimated 10 million tortoises were shipped into the UK for the pet trade between 1890 and 1984 before the initial ban was introduced. This trade is back! … and Tortoises are being imported in substantial numbers. However, DEFRA are failing to prevent this illegal trade and are in fact licensing it. These tortoises go through untold misery and often arrive here with chronic worm infestations and dehydrated, which far too often contributes to their early demise.
A NOTE OF WARNING
Where dealers, pet shops and garden centres are offering Tortoises for sale, described as 2 or 3 years old these are normally wild caught Tortoises. Please be careful as in most cases they have been taken from their homes with CITES paperwork obtained fraudulently in the E.C. Most of these Tortoises are in a poor state of health from their ordeal and are offered to potential new owners with the wrong advice/care and information.
ONLY BUY FROM A UK BREEDER !
Should you want the correct information and guidance regarding Tortoises, make sure you contact a reputable and established UK Breeder.
