Q: Will Colin be playing doubles even when he will be
eligible to play singles regularly on the ATP tour ?
I am concerned about this because Britain really lacks a good doubles
team.
A [from a member of Team Fleming]: I
don't think Colin will ever give up doubles, he enjoys it too much and
his partnership with Jamie is immense. Their success is getting
recognition eg: the Davis Cup call-up and the Tennis Scotland award.
Colin tends to use doubles as a relaxation from the singles.
Q: Will Jamie Baker or Colin Fleming feature in the Davis Cup tie against Serbia & Montenegro in April this year ?
A: Colin and Jamie have been selected
as hitting partners for the Davis Cup squad. Colin accepted his call
late last Friday night. Both will join up with the squad after their
tournament commitments this week have ended. Jamie will travel up to
Scotland from Bath and Colin will be flown home from Cuba by Jeremy
Bates. If Andy Murray withdraws due to his ankle injury, either Jamie
or Colin will replace him in the team and will have a chance of playing
a rubber.
Q: Can you tell me some more information on Jamie Baker's training blocks ?
A: Jamie's training blocks generally last from 2-3 weeks. Jamie does a lot of strength sessions in the gym eg:
weightlifting, he feels this is important as it increases his stamina
for when he plays very long matches. When he gets back home, he usually
takes the opportunity to have a training block as due to lack of
equipment it's generally impossible to do physical strength training
while touring on the futures circuit.
Q: What is Colin's favourite surface ?
A: Colin's favourite surfaces are outdoor hard and indoor carpet though he has achieved good results on other surfaces eg: clay.
Q: Will Jamie Baker be able to get a direct
entry into Wimbledon this year or will he have to go through qualifying
first ?
A: In order to get into the Wimbledon
main draw directly, Jamie will have to be ranked close to the top 100
by the beginning of June. As things stand on the 8th March, Jamie is
ranked 309 and so would have to gain around 300 points [the equivalent
of winning 3 masters series events] which is extremely unlikely. Jamie
has a very good chance of getting into the Wimbledon main draw via a
wildcard. The LTA rules for Wimbledon wildcards state that players must
be ranked in the top 275 by the beginning of June to get a wildcard.
Jamie's ranking will move up into the top 300 next Monday so he has a
very good chance of getting the wildcard. He and his team are confident
that he will do so given his fantastic results so far this year.
Q: Are Colin and Jamie going to enter any ATP tournaments and if so, when ?
A:
Colin won't be playing any
ATP doubles qualies with Jamie until the grass-court season. They both
want to improve their singles rankings at the same time and so they'd
want to enter singles qualies as well but at the moment neither of them
is ranked high enough to do that. At the moment they're going to try
and play more challenger events - singles qualies and doubles
main draw as the success they had in Wrexham gave them more
confidence. After the satellite they're going for a 25K+H
challenger in Wolfsburg.
Q: How did Colin get started in tennis ?
A: Colin's grandfather got him
into tennis and he started at age 8. Colin's natural ability at tennis
comes genetically as his grandfather was the national table tennis
coach and his aunt won a medal in the commonwealth games at table
tennis.
Q: What are Colin's hobbies ?
A: Football, watching films, snooker,
golf and "playing the name game." Colin plays the name game everywhere
he goes with Jamie Murray and Jamie's coach. Colin reckons he's an
expert now.
