Do You Believe Your Own Eyes?

Look at the picture on the left. How many colums has it got? Look again! Take a look at the wheel, If you focus on the yellow dots you will see that the wheel is turning clockwise. However, if you focus on the red dots you will see it is going anti-clockwise, how can this be?

Does this look like a very large coke bottle? Actually it's as 'flat' as the rest of the pavement. This has been crayoned onto the pavement by a street artist.

Looking up or looking down?

See your Blind Spot!  This can be unsettling as it shows how bad your eyes are.  Hold your hand over your left eye and focus on the cross. You will then see your blind spot, which isn't usually at the furthest point where you would expect!

The picture to the left is a street painting of a laptop on flat ground. What do you think about the pic on the right? A fake? These planes are both landing at the same airport although there is a distance of over 250 metres between them!

Welcome to The Age of Subliminal Advertising

Subliminal advertising has been used against the public for some time no Subliminal communication is strictly related to the issue of mind control. In a society that proclaims freedom of thought and speech the only alternative to censorship is mass indoctrination instilling “politically correct” thoughts and opinions will ensure no backslashes from free speech. Now, all this has to be done in a covert way in order to preserve the face-values of a democratic society. This issue is so hot that it has immediately captured the interest of advertising agencies and political propagandists.

The results are quite astonishing: what is commonly considered immoral gets subliminally embedded in a final products that is bought at face value for what it in fact rejects at its core. Clear examples of this are the many x-rated and four-letter-words that populate the subliminal side of almost every ad to be found in middle-class magazines.

Have a look at the advert below to see if you can see the subliminal yourself before reading the explanation.

Could you see it? Have a look at the woman on the left who his holding tight to, and pulling on her skirt. There is also another woman there with her back facing us and her head between the womans legs. If you can't see it yet look at the woman on the left, now look at the gap in her skirt at the bottom, here is the subliminal womans bottom and the rest (hair, waiste, body, arm and action) should be clear! Although consciously most people would not see this, sub consciously most would, and it is true, Sex Sells!

All the lines above are straight verticle lines, there is no 'thicker and thinner' section. Try a ruler or sheet of paper against your screen to see.

Have a look at the example above. Which line is longest, a or c? You would certainly say a! They are actually both the same length! Try a ruler!

Have a look at the pic above. It is a still image, however, if you look at the dot and move your head closer and further from the screen, you see the surrounding circles alternating. This is another example of a 'trick of the eye'.

Have a look at the picture on the right. Look at the checks marked A and B. Both are totally different colours and shades you would say? Both A and B are exactly the same colour. Cover up the other squares to see! Similarly, the line in the box on the right seems to change but the colour and shade is the same throughout!

Left - A similar illusion to the Roman Column above, how many wickets, 2 or 3? Left, stare at the moving circles centre for about a minute and a half and then look at the palm of your hand.

The subconscious mind can recognise a quick flash where the conscious wouldn't stand a chance! Although you didn't recognise seeing anything last time you watched the adverts you would have really seen a lot more! The below example is obvious, however with a much faster flash you would not see it but your brain would register it! This tecnique is, and has been used often.

Reverse Speech

An 'outdoor loo with a view'. I'm not sure what the designers had in mind with this one! I wonder how many people who use this loo are looking around anxiously while pee-ing or poo-ing? I've also read these loo's are popular with couples looking for safe exitement! Ha!

Above - Missile Balloons attatched to a vehicle. This ballons look quite real. I bet when the driver drives at high speed, he really gets a few worried onlookers!

Above left - (Subliminal) Can you see the words liar written in the face? Right - Maybee driver forgot he was on duty and thought he was in his convertible!

OK, the pencil in the water illusion is well known, but it shows how the eyes can be decieved without fancy pictures! Above left, young woman and old woman.

SMOKING PISTOLS: GEORGE BUSH AND THE SUBLIMINAL "RAT AD"

 

 

 

"At first glance, the Republican television commercial on prescription drugs looks like a run of the mill attack advertisement. The announcer starts by lauding George W. Bush's proposal for dealing with prescription drugs, and criticizes the plan being offered by Vice President Al Gore. Fragments of the phrase "bureaucrats decide" ? deriding Mr. Gore's proposal ? then dance around the screen. Then, if the viewer watches very closely, something else happens. The word "rats," a fragment of the word "bureaucrats," pops up in one frame. And though the image lasts only one thirtieth of a second, it is in huge white capital letters, larger than any other word on the commercial. The advertisement then declares, "The Gore prescription plan: bureaucrats decide."...

"Almost every advertising professional interviewed said that given the technology by which commercials are assembled frame by frame, it was virtually impossible for a producer not to know the word was there. "There is no way that anything Alex Castellanos does is an accident," said Greg Stevens, a veteran Republican admaker here. Bobby Baker, chief of the office of political programming at the Federal Communications Commission, said that if the word had been deliberately inserted in the commercial that would reflect "reckless" behavior. While he said the commission did not prohibit subliminal advertising, Mr. Baker explained that "we have policy statements and public notices that indicate they are inherently intended to be deceptive and might be contrary to the public interest." Many Disney movies (Including Aladdin, The Lion King and The Little Mermaid) were reputed to have incorporated 'subliminal messages' some before they were withdrawn and reissued.

 

 

 

Above is an extract of a frame from the Lion King. The scattering of clouds is suggestive of the word Sex, or possibly, as one or two commentators have suggested, SFX.

 

 

 

Above is an extract from another Disney film frame. In the background you can see a naked woman framed in the window.

 

Symbology, present, although hidden, is a popular occurence. Take the German car manufacturer Volkswagen. The designer of the logo found a way to get the swatstika in there, without being obvious! See the 3 second video below...

 

 

How far back does Subliminal Advertising go?

 

 

This retro Coca Cola poster above is a good example of basic subliminals. The people at Coke wanted you to associate youth, vibrancy, sexiness and attractiveness with the use of their product. These qualities are visually implied in this advertisement. Interestingly, the poster gives you no instructions such as "Enjoy Coke!", The poster doesn't need to; if you associate being desirable with their product you'll buy Coke without being asked. These messages are said to be "subliminal", a silent, implied form of communication.

 

Subliminal advertising is nothing new, there was a big uproar in the 50s. Below is an article from 1958.

 

 

One of the problems with modern advertising compared with back in the 50s is that things are so much more advanced. Huge amounts of money have been put into the study of subliminal advertising and how to use it effectively.
