hullo. can I get you a drink?
|
The Valley and the Spruce Hoose are real places. We try to leave our doors open for
friends and family. Come for the mountains, desert, and big sky, but hang around for the casual gatherings in the backyard or by the fire.

spruce hoose — big house on the valley
|
You've made it this far, so come on in for a pint of Brutal Bitter out of the keg and a BLT sandwich. We've been known to cater to a vegetarian or two, too.
This is where the Schoberlews live. It is about 100 years old and might have once been a house of
ill-repute! None of floors lie straight, but you can stick a heavy picture on any wall. It's got more rooms than you can shake a fist at and at 3 floors, it might be the tallest house in the valley.
We sometimes think of it as our own Peckerwood Palace because it's the grandest house in our white trash barrio. It's a work in progress to get all the "shades of the '70s" out, but we think we'll get it done before we die...just in time for the Seventies to be back in vogue, no doubt.

spruce trailer - it's so "gezellig"
|
I fell in love with my in-laws' 1964 Aristocrat Land Commander the minute I saw it. They were so cool, they gave it to us to house the overflow of friends we sometimes get. It's in good repair and even smells nice! It has two doubles and a single bed and wireless connectivity! I sometimes sneak off here to work.
On some party nights, it's where the bad girls who drink hang out. Folks spending the night here will be treated to a Gen-u-ine Bay of Pigs cocktail (Clamato, beer, lime, lemon, and special spices).

little sauna on the valley
|
A little bit of blood, a lot of sweat, and even a few tears went into the building of this wee sauna.
It's made out of cordwood, which we gathered and processed ourselves, and it even has a timecapsule mortared into the walls.
We fire it up to about 200 F. and cook.
There's a little horse trough around the side for cool dips. In winter, you've got to bust through the ice with your legs.

spruce cottage — the little cottage on the valley
|
The Spruce Cottage is Chez Janet now. It's got
one bedroom, one bath, a wee kitchen, and a living room.
Built after World War Two, it's a testament to the California Ranch-style home.
Wyatt can often be found hanging around Janet's doors, begging to bang on her African drums.

our lady of perpetual drink and diminishing swear words
|
We are working on swearing less like sailors and keeping the tradition of keg buying alive. |
|
a rare cloudy day in the valley
|
With less than four inches of rain a year and another 2 inches from snow melt, the valley is a dry, dry place.
With about 6,000-10,000 feet vertical gain in the mountains on both sides, the valley is one of the deepest valleys in the world.
A friend who once came here on holiday to decompress from covering the elections in Afghanistan took one look around and said that it looked just like...Afghanistan.
