I recently found a site called http://www.googlefight.com, I found it to be quite amusing, pitting popular names such as John and Tom against each other, games I play, or whatever I could think of. Eventually I started to wonder what the highest results for a word would be. It didn't take too long to figure out what it would be, but after that I teamed up with a friend to find some more things out. We used this site to help aid our searches http://esl.about.com/library/vocabulary/bl1000_list1.htm.

We decided on 25 words to use. As you can see, simple words
like The and Of ranked the highest. The most likely reason for this is because
they can be used in almost everything we say or type. Next is HTML, the most
probable reason for its high scoring is due to links on websites. Now we get to
the interesting part, the last 20 words.
At 20, we have Not. This could simply be for the same reasons The or Of are
ranked so high, or it could be something else. My first thought was that the
human race is overall a bit negative, which in turn suggestions we are, or that
at least I am. Not too surprisingly Internet is ranked fairly high, but
unexpectedly, Learn and School aren't too far behind. This suggests we as a
race are still seeking further advancement and most likely willing to learn.
Music is right behind learning which suggests a creative side, which is also a
good thing.
Windows, Google, and Microsoft rank 11th, 12th, and 13th respectively. There
isn't much to say about this, Microsoft and Google are two of the biggest, if
not the biggest tech companies today, and Windows is the most popular operating
system made by Microsoft.
Oddly enough, the 14th and 15th most popular results on our study were rock and
paper. My first thoughts were "Rock, Paper, Scissors!", but scissors
is quite low. On the other hand, rocks are quite common and I know I've had to
do at least 2 reports, and many homework assignments on rocks. Paper, being
used every day, by millions of people for millions of uses, seems like a
logical fit when you think about it.
Now to one of the more interesting areas, Aids is next up, which goes back to
the whole negativity theory, or maybe it's because people want to be informed.
Or even people might just be scared, and what to understand more about the subject.
Aids ranking so high could be the result of anyone of these things, or even all
of them.
Another interesting area was the sexual area. Sex, Drugs, Gay, and Lesbian all
ranked highest in this area. Although Drugs doesn't exactly fit in this area, they
do have some things in common. Of course our society is interested in sex, and
drugs, but with how many people around that hate the idea of homosexuality,
it's a bit odd that these two would rank higher than some of the other sexual
terms. Sure, it could be due to the fact that it is a highly debated issue, but
it also suggests a bit a curiosity.
The last five words, Balls, Cock, Pussy, Vagina, and Boobs aren't quite as
important as the rest; they were mostly put in to prove are point about
homosexuality. Both balls and cock ranked higher than all three of the female
counter parts. This goes to prove either that us men really are a bit curious,
or women are damn horny.
Overall, it seems the results suggest we could be a bit negative, bi-curious,
but still want to learn. One result I forgot to include was Fun ranking in
between Paper and Rock. A bit low on the list, but doesn't necessarily mean too
much. These results were of how many times each word was found on the internet
by Google, so it might not do such a great job of looking at the interests or
trends of our times as a study on what people actually searched for, but it
still provides some interesting insight. Gives us all something to think about
at least.
