About Judo

 Judo is a martial art that was derived from jujitsu, and early form of self-defense by Jigoro Kano. In modern day, judo has been modified so that it can be played as a safe sport for both male and female participants of all ages. Judo develops strenght, agility, endurance, stability and it also builds confidence, which makes it an ideal sport for young children.

In judo, the athlete (judoka) wears a judogi as shown below;

With a belt tied around the waist as a symbol of experience and to keep the judogi in place. There are 7 different coloured belts, represtenting different levels of experience in this sport, which are; White, Yellow, Orange, Green, Blue, Brown & Black.

Judo as a Team Sport

Although when competing, there are only two fighters on the mat, competitive judo is a team sport, in which the team is there both to support one another while competing, and also to assist in training, pointing out flaws and suggesting different techniques one could adopt. Hence judo is not only a way to keep fit, but also a way of life and character development. Different lessons offered in this sport can serve a judoka throughout his or her life, on and off the mat.
