Welcome to Third Grade! My name is Joan Niesen-Peters and I will be your child's teacher. This is my fourth year at GEA and my 6th year teaching this grade level. I received my BA from the U of A and have both my SEI and Early Childhood Endorsements. I am married to Shawn and the mother of 7 (4 sons, 1 daughter, and 2 step-daughters). My oldest son, Jeremy is serving our country in the USAF. My second oldest, Aaron is a college sophomore studying engineering. My step-daughters, Meagen and Shayna, are both High School graduates and reside in Texas. My daughter, Rebecca is a Senior in high school and performs for Top Hat Theater Company. My son, Phillip is in 7th grade, and my youngest son, Teagen will be two in August.
In third grade there is much to learn and sometimes it may seem a bit overwhelming. Just remember, once you have a routine established, things are easier. That is why I need the first few weeks of school to establish a rapport with my students and will not be needing any parent volunteers during this time. I will be sending home a paper for you to fill out if you are able to give some of your time to helping within the classroom. Unfortunately, younger siblings will not be allowed to assist in volunteering. Thank you for your understanding and support during this time of adjustment.
As for homework, your child will have some every night. This will help reinforce the learning that occurs in class and should not take more than 45 minutes to complete. Reading assignments will be given in addition to the scheduled homework and should take approximately 15-30 minutes to complete. Spelling list will be posted on the website and also sent home on Mondays. Any student not completing classwork will need to finish it for homework and return it the next day. Late assignments will be deducted 10% per day. Students who are absent will be given one day for each absent day to complete missing work.
