WISDOM

Before we begin the Scriptural study of “Wisdom”, I believe it would behoove us to try to understand the relationship that our “attributes” (our “substance” = body, soul, & spirit; and our “faculties” = heart, mind, & conscience) have to do with “wisdom”.

WISE”: There are 33 verses in the Scriptures with the words wise & heart together.

[Exodus 28:3; 31:6; 35:10,25; 36:1-2,8; Leviticus 19:17; 1Kings 3:12; Job 9:4; 37:24; Psalms 101:2; Proverbs 10:8; 11:29; 15:7; 16:21,23; 18:15; 22:17; 23:15,19; 27:11; 28:26; Ecclesiastes 2:15; 7:4,7,22; 8:5; 9:1; 10:2; Ezekiel 13:17; Matthew 18:35; Romans 10:6]

There are only two verses in the entire Bible with the words “wise” & “mind” together [Proverbs 29:11 & Romans 12:16]; and in the context, neither verse indicates that there is such a thing as a “wise mind”.

In the Bible, a person is described as being “wise hearted“ [Exodus 28:3; 31:6; 35:10,25; 36:1-2,8]; “wise in heart[Job 9:4; Proverbs 10:8; 16:21]; or “wise of heart [Job 37:24; Proverbs 11:29], but neverwise minded”; “wise in mind” or “wise of mind”.

There are only two verses in the Bible with the words “wise” & “soul” together [Psalms 19:7 & Proverbs 11:30]; in context, neither verse indicates that the soul is “wise” or that there is such a thing as a “wise soul”.

There are no verses in the Bible with the words “wise” & “conscience” together.

WISDOM”: There are 31 verses in the Scriptures with the words wisdom & heart together. [Exodus 28:3; 31:6; 35:26,35; 36:1-2; 1Kings 4:29; 10:24; 2Chronicles 1:11; 9:23; Job 38:36; Psalms 49:3; 90:12; Proverbs 2:2,10; 8:5; 12:8; 14:33; 17:16; Ecclesiastes 1:13,16-17; 2:3; 7:25; 8:16; Isaiah 47:10; Ezekiel 28:5,17; Daniel 2:30; Luke 1:17; Colossians 3:16].

However, there is only one verse in the entire Bible where the words “wisdom” & “mind” are together [Revelation 17:9], which indicates that the “mind” can have (hath) “wisdom”, but the preponderance of Scripture indicates that “Wisdomresides in the heartnot in the mind.

[Proverbs 2:10; 14:33; Job 38:6; Exodus 31:6; 35:35; 36:1-2; 1 Kings 10:24; 2 Chronicles 9:23].

Of a total of 15 verses in the Bible with the words “wisdom” & “spirittogether, two of the verses show no connection between the “spirit” & “wisdom” [Ecclesiastes 1:17 & 2:26], while 13 of the verses link God with “wisdom” and the “spirit” in some way.

[Exodus 28:3; 31:3; 35:31; Deuteronomy 34:9; Isaiah 11:2; Daniel 5:11, 14; Luke 1:17; 2:40; Acts 6:10; 1Corinthians 2:4; 12:8; Ephesians 1:17]

There are three verses in the Bible with the words “wisdom” & “soultogether [Proverbs 2:10; 19:8; 24:14]; in context, there are no verses that indicate that the soul possesses “wisdom”.

There is only one verse in the Bible with the words “wisdom” & “consciencetogether (2Corinthians 1:12); in context, the verse does not indicate that the conscience possesses “wisdom”. {It appears that man’s conscience is devoid of “wisdom” and cannot acquire it – as exhibited by Solomon’s conduct in his “old age” – even though he was the wisest man in the Old Testament, he still fell into IDOLATRY. [1Kings 11:1-8]}

In conclusion: According to the Scriptures - of the threesubstances” that make up man (body, soul, and spirit); only man’s spirit can possesswisdom” (i.e. the true spiritual “wisdom” that comes only from God). And of the threefaculties” that man possesses (heart, mind, and conscience); it appears that while the mind can have “wisdom” [Revelation 17:9] there is no such thing as a “wise mind”. “Wisdomresides in the heart of man [Proverbs 2:10; 14:33; Job 38:6; Exodus 31:6; 35:35; 36:1-2; 1 Kings 10:24; 2 Chronicles 9:23] - whether it be “worldly wisdom” or “Godly (true “spiritual”) “wisdom”.

The failure to discern the difference between “knowledge”, “understanding”, and “wisdom”; the failure to understand which of our “substances” and “faculties” are involved in obtaining these things, and the failure to acknowledge where ALL true “spiritual” knowledge, understanding, and wisdom come from, reveals the fatal flaw in practically all modern day teaching methods and instruction (including “Christian” Schools & Universities and “Bible” Schools & Colleges).

To teach only “knowledge”, with an emphasis directed almost exclusively to the mind, is to IGNORE - the SOURCE (Almighty God) of ALL true “spiritual” knowledge, understanding, and wisdom; and to DISCOUNT the CRITICAL PART that our “spirit” and “heart” play in obtaining these things; and to OVERLOOK the OPERATION, PURPOSE, and FUNCTION that our “heart” serves in our daily lives.

Ecclesiastes 9:3 This is an evil among all things that are done under the sun, that there is one event unto all: yea, also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead.

Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

Proverbs 4:23 Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.

TRUE SPIRITUAL WISDOM

DIFFERENT “KINDS” OF WISDOM

There exist two different kinds of “WISDOM” in this world. It is extremely important for Bible believers to distinguish between “human wisdom” (i.e. “wisdom” that is not spiritual, but is worldly; temporal; secular; and carnal) and “spiritual Wisdom” {i.e. “Wisdom” that is given (or taught) by God, and which comes directly from God}.

MANKIND’S QUEST TO ACQUIRE “WISDOM

{All Of Man’s Religions & Philosophies - Including Humanistic Psychiatry & Psychology.}

HUMAN (WORLDLY) “WISDOM = HOW & Why about earthly, sensual, & carnal matters.

{Human “wisdom” is subject to carnal belief systems, cultural influence, personal prejudice, denominational bias, and ultimately human error.}

GODLY (Spiritual) “WISDOM” = HOW & Why about spiritual matters.

{Spiritual “wisdom” is the “WISDOM” that is given or taught by Almighty God, and which is always Factually True; Scripturally Sound; and Spiritually Edifying.}

Godly Wisdom (true “spiritual wisdom”) is something that can NOT be acquired by studying prescribed courses in a “Christian” School, College, or University. Neither can it be obtained by studying “Christian” authors and commentators. True “spiritual wisdom” is given only by God [Proverbs 2:6; James 1:5]; and only to those persons who have a genuine “fear of the Lord” [Job 28:28; Psalms 111:10; Proverbs 9:10]; and who “hast asked” of God for “wisdom” [1Chronicles 22:12; 2Chronicles 1:10-12]; and who give their “heart to know wisdom” [Ecclesiastes 1:17]; and who have applied their “heart to know, and to search, and to seek out wisdom” [Ecclesiastes 7:25].

THE IMPORTANCE AND WORTH OF WISDOM

Proverbs 3:13 Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding.

Proverbs 24:13 My son, eat thou honey, because it is good; and the honeycomb, which is sweet to thy taste:
14
So shall the knowledge of wisdom be unto thy soul: when thou hast found it, then there shall be a reward, and thy expectation shall not be cut off.

Proverbs 19:8 He that getteth wisdom loveth his own soul: he that keepeth understanding shall find good.

Proverbs 17:16 Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to get wisdom, seeing he hath no heart to it? {Wisdom must first be “desired” – we must have a “heart to it” before we can obtain it.}

Proverbs 4:5 Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth.

Job 28:18 No mention shall be made of coral, or of pearls: for the price of wisdom is above rubies.

Proverbs 8:11 For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.

Proverbs 4:7 Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.

Proverbs 16:16 How much better is it to get wisdom than gold! and to get understanding rather to be chosen than silver!

When it comes to acquiring or obtaining “knowledge”, “discernment”, “understanding”, or “wisdom” – according to the Scriptures “WISDOM is the PRINCIPAL THING” (the Highest or Best = i.e. “Gold”); and next in order of importance is UNDERSTANDING (next Best = i.e. “Silver”). When it comes to the Scriptural order of importance “KNOWLEDGE” places a distant third place! Modern day Humanism has it all wrong - “Knowledge”, without Godly “Wisdom” (true “spiritual wisdom”) and “Understanding”, only “puffeth up” [1Corinthians 8:1], which brings us to the typical modern day “highly educated (i.e. schooled) “Christian” in America.

Today’s know it all carnal Christians” (who eagerly fawn all over the latest famous “Christian”

Celebrities or Commentators) have fallen for the perverse Humanistic logic that “knowledge is the KEY to understanding all of the questions pertaining to life, (including those questions concerning God & Creation); and that “knowledgeis the ANSWER to all of life’s issues and problems.* These “Christians” ignore the wise men [Deuteronomy 1:13] in their midst (simply because they may lack a “formal education” or “Institutional Degrees”) and have forgotten, or more likely have never known, that - according to the Holy Scriptures: “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: ” and that “fools despise wisdom and instruction.[Proverbs 1:7]

{* For example: Humanisticsex education” – the false and perverse premise that IF young people can just obtain enough “knowledge” about “sexual matters” that they will inevitably choose to do “the right thing”!}

Proverbs 14:8 The wisdom of the prudent is to understand his way: but the folly of fools is deceit.

Proverbs 14:33 Wisdom resteth in the heart of him that hath understanding: but that which is in the midst of fools is made known.

16 Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour.

13 Man knoweth not the price thereof; neither is it found in the land of the living.
14 The depth saith, It is not in me: and the sea saith, It is not with me.
15 It cannot be gotten for gold, neither shall silver be weighed for the price thereof.
16 It cannot be valued with the gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx, or the sapphire.
17 The gold and the crystal cannot equal it: and the exchange of it shall not be for jewels of fine gold.
18 No mention shall be made of coral, or of pearls: for the price of wisdom is above rubies.

19 The topaz of Ethiopia shall not equal it, neither shall it be valued with pure gold.

Proverbs 3:13 Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding.
14 For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold.

WISDOM & SATAN {WISDOM - PERVERTED & CORRUPTED}

Isaiah 47:10 For thou hast trusted in thy wickedness: thou hast said, None seeth me. Thy wisdom and thy knowledge, it hath perverted thee; and thou hast said in thine heart, I am, and none else beside me. {check}

Ezekiel 28:1 The word of the LORD came again unto me, saying,
2 Son of man, say unto the prince of Tyrus, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thine heart is lifted up, and thou hast said, I am a God, I sit in the seat of God, in the midst of the seas; yet thou art a man, and not God, though thou set thine heart as the heart of God:
3 Behold, thou art wiser than Daniel; there is no secret that they can hide from thee:
4 With thy wisdom and with thine understanding thou hast gotten thee riches, and hast gotten gold and silver into thy treasures:
5 By thy great wisdom and by thy traffick hast thou increased thy riches, and thine heart is lifted up because of thy riches:
6 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thou hast set thine heart as the heart of God;
7 Behold, therefore I will bring strangers upon thee, the terrible of the nations: and they shall draw their swords against the beauty of thy wisdom, and they shall defile thy brightness.

Ezekiel 28:11 Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
12 Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty.
13 Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.
14 Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy
mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.
15 Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.
16 By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the
mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.
17 Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee.
18 Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy traffick; therefore will I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee, and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee.
19 All they that know thee among the people shall be astonished at thee: thou shalt be a terror, and never shalt thou be any more.

James 3:13 Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.

15 This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.
16 For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.

THE “WISDOM” OF THE WORLD {earthly, sensual, devilish, temporal; secular, & carnal}

Job 13:5 O that ye would altogether hold your peace! and it should be your wisdom.

Job 15:8 Hast thou heard the secret of God? and dost thou restrain wisdom to thyself?

1 Corinthians 1:19 For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.

1 Corinthians 1:20 Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?

1 Corinthians 1:21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.

1 Corinthians 1:22 For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:

1 Corinthians 2:1 And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God.

1 Corinthians 2:4 And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:

5 That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.

6 Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought:

1 Corinthians 2:13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

1 Corinthians 3:19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.

2 Corinthians 1:12 For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conversation in the world, and more abundantly to you-ward.

James 3:14 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.
15 This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.

16 For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.

In order to offset or counterthe wisdom of the world” and Satan’s “devices” [2Corinthians 2:11] there must be something (“the wisdom of God”) to take its place; and that’s where the Holy word of God comes in. Everything that is necessary to live a life pleasing to God can be found within the pages of A BOOK (i.e. the Holy Bible – Matthew 4:4; Luke 4:4). The Lord Jesus Christ declared that “Thy word is truth” [John 17:17], and so it behooves us to speak and teach the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth!

Ephesians 3:8 Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ;
9 And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:
10 To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God,

{MAN'IFOLD, a. many and fold. Of divers kinds; many in number; numerous; multiplied.}

According to the Scriptures, it is up to the whole “church” (not just elders/pastors) to make known “the manifold wisdom of God”. From the very beginning of the church of God up to the present day it has been the church’s duty and responsibility to not only preach the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ, but to also preach and teach “publickly, and from house to house” [Acts 20:20] - “all the counsel of God” [Acts 20:27].

REJECTION OF GOD’S HOLY WORD = EARTHLY, SENSUAL, & DEVILISH WISDOM

Jeremiah 8:9 The wise men are ashamed, they are dismayed and taken: lo, they have rejected the word of the LORD; and what wisdom is in them?

James 3:15 This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.

When the “wisdom of God” is rejected, an earthly, sensual, and devilishwisdom” takes its place. In these last days - godless Humanism (which includes Psychiatry and Psychology) is displacing the “wisdom of God” not only throughout the secular world, but also in the Christian churches. The failure or neglect of the various churches of God throughout church history to make known “the manifold wisdom of God” has led to the departure from the words of God; the rejection of “the Scripture of truth”; and the apostasy of every single Christian church (school, college, university, or institution) ever established from the time of the Lord Jesus Christ’s resurrection up to the early 1900’s, and shall continue to do so until the return of Jesus Christ.

Based on the examination of the Scriptures dealing with “knowledge”, “discernment”, “understanding”, and “wisdom”; I believe that each of our faculties plays a part - in either obtaining these things or in their operation. {The following deductions are only my personal observations and are certainly not “set in stone”.}

WORDLY KNOWLEDGE {carnal, temporal, secular - mainly a function of the mind}

WORLDLY DISCERNMENT {carnal, temporal, secular - mainly a function of the mind & conscience}

WORLDLY UNDERSTANDING {carnal, temporal, secular - mainly a function of the mind & heart}

WORLDLY WISDOM {carnal, temporal, secular - mainly a function of the mind & heart}

I believe that the principal difference between Worldly knowledge, discernment. understanding, & wisdom and SPIRITUAL Knowledge, Discernment, Understanding, and Wisdom is the part that our “spirit” ( one of the three “substances” of man) and the Holy Spirit of God play in obtaining these things and in their operation within a believer.

SPIRITUAL KNOWLEDGE is primarily a function of the spirit first – next the mind, and then the heart; and still dependent upon the conscience for guidance.

SPIRITUAL KNOWLEDGE is primarily dependent upon man’s spirit receiving instruction from the Holy Spirit, and is a function and operation of the mind (first), and then the heart; and is dependent upon the conscience for guidance.

SPIRITUAL DISCERNMENT is primarily dependent upon the spirit and is a function of the heart (first), and then the mind, the mind; and the conscience for guidance.}

SPIRITUAL DISCERNMENT is primarily dependent upon man’s spirit receiving instruction from the Holy Spirit, and is a function and operation of the heart (first), and then the mind; and is dependent upon the conscience for guidance.

To overlook or ignore the role that the Holy Spirit plays in instructing all true believers and to discount or disregard the part that the believer’s spirit plays in receiving spiritual instruction from the Spirit of God is to invite disaster into the ranks of God’s people.

Proverbs 17:27 He that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit.

Job 32:8 But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding.
