It was in the early 90's that Ian Thornley pulled up his Canadian roots and left Toronto for the hallowed halls of the The Berklee College Of Music (Boston) to study jazz.
As in most learning institutions there is as much, if not more, learning to be had after class. Ian and and his college mates, bassist David Henning, guitarist Brian Doherty and drummer Forrest Williams wasted no time discovering this. From their extracurricular jamming sessions progressed the idea of forming a band... and BIG WRECK was born.
Big Wreck was packed full of talent instrumentally but none of the members really considered themselves singers. Ian, not one to be shy of new challenges took the task on and in short order became the front-man for the band. His self taught vocals have become as legendary as his guitar playing.
Big Wreck went on to record and release their debut album in 1997, In Loving Memory Of. From this album came the hits The Oaf, That Song, Blown Wide Open and the classic Under The Lighthouse, Overemphasizing and By The Way. In Loving Memory left its mark on both Canada and the United States air waves.
Big Wreck followed up their debut album with a second, The Pleasure and The Greed from which Big Wreck fans were treated to Inhale, All By Design, Ease My Mind and Ladylike to name but just a few. Prior to their break up in 2002 the fans were treated to many live shows with bands like Nickelback opening. There were also 2 stellar performances, one with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra September 2001 and the other at the Roy Thompson Hall with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, October 6th, 2001.
