Thomas climbs one place up in GC

Thomas Löfkvist moved up one place to eighth in the overall standings at Tirreno-Adriatico after ending the fifth stage less than a minute down on the triumphant Philippe Gilbert.

Thomas spent much of the day shadowing the race's other main contenders and kept his focus as attacks came thick and fast in the final kilometres before crossing the line 10 seconds ahead of overnight leader Robert Gesink (Rabobank).

now he sits 27 seconds adrift with two stages remaining.
