LOCAL LINKS
This is our effort to introduce you to some local favorites you may not be aware of. Too often people tend to go to familiar places: the big 'supercenters', the franchise restaurants or well known hotels. Not so fast, folks! The BIG guys won't go out of business..., but what about the 'little guys'? There are many gems tucked away in and around the Farmville area. Why not forgo that supposedly 'healthier' lunch of artificial flavorings, colorings additives and 'meat-like' substances at the national burger joint for some r e a l f o o d at a smaller establishment? We have a few of our favorites listed here. Take a look. You might be pleasantly surprised!

Farmville FINALLY has a HEALTH FOOD STORE!
Kenny and Wilma share the same passion as we do; eat good, naturally produced food, use non-toxic, environmentally friendly products and teach others about the benefits of eating well and living a environmentally conscious life.
This has become an addiction for me: the JUICE BAR and Kenny’s all natural fantastic vegetarian Jamaican patties. His LUNCH SPECIAL from

Kenny is an advocate of eating naturally and as close to our original diet as we can get. He has two other lunch specials: Wednesday is SOUP DAY and FRIDAY is PIZZA day. This pizza is NOT what regular pizza places has – this is specially made by Wilma from a flax seed crust, fresh tomatoes and soy cheese and spices. You can sprinkle on any or all of some of the special toppings for a truly unique –and healthy- lunch! Vegans, vegetarians and carnivores alike WILL enjoy this.
He also carries many other things, with new items arriving every week. See, he listens to what his customers want and orders accordingly.
He has natural health care products, herbs, teas, spices, tinctures, bottled organic juices, ‘junk’ food that is actually good for you, soy cheeses, gluten-free products, organic yogurt, and an absolutely wonderful coffee alternative called ‘Teechino’. (try the chocolate mint: it has real chocolate and real mint, not fake flavorings!)
Just arrived: "NOW" vitamins and other items from that line - all natural, suitable for vegan/vegetarians and very affordable.
If you get ‘hooked’ on his juices, he even has a selection of the top of the line Acme (yep – that’s the real name!) juicers. You can whip up carrot juice in your own home!
If you are interested in a healthier lifestyle, this brand new hidden gem in Farmville IS the place to go!

How would you like to go to
You can, you know – all you have to do is go to THE BAKERY. It is unlike any other place in town; a totally relaxed atmosphere…, just like wandering into a little café in somewhere in France, Italy, Germany or another little town abroad!
Now, the name is a bit misleading. It is not a ‘bakery…, bakery’ where cakes and pies are made. They specialize in the BEST real hard crust baguettes, breads and croissants in the area. You will find none better anywhere, I guarantee it.
They also have unique sandwiches made with pure, fresh ingredients. Their soups are delicious and coffee is just divine!
If you are looking for an interesting gift of imported food or a fine wine, this is the place to find it.
This is the perfect place to take out-of-town friends or to stop for a breather from your downtown shopping or errands.

I had the opportunity to see Miss Emily’s firsthand. Necia and Brian invited me to come for a visit to tour the house and for a sample of their English breakfast. I have two words for those of you wanting a relaxing break - GO THERE.
Located 25 miles from Farmville, 21 miles from Hampden-Sydney, 10 miles outside of Keysville, this is an idyllic spot. It is set in historic Charlotte Courthouse which has kept much of its earlier charm.
The house is magnificent and has been painstakingly restored. A sense of peace envelopes you at once as you step into the wide entry hall, complete with a softly ticking handmade grandfather clock. There are two rooms off the foyer; to the left is a sitting room, to the right is a large formal dining room.
In the kitchen there is a sunny breakfast nook. We sat here and chatted while eating Necia’s delicious English breakfast of eggs, roasted tomatoes, mushrooms, bacon, scrumptious sausage, bread from a local bakery, freshly prepared carrot juice and her special coffee blend. It was absolutely wonderful!
Necia and Brian will provide their guests with locally produced items; preferably organic. Their aim is to serve good, healthy food and support their area farmers and businesspeople. If you are vegetarian, you can be sure of an excellent meal, too. An evening dinner is also available by prior arrangement. You can inquire about the menus when you make your reservation.
There are two rooms available at Miss Emily’s. The Garden Room, with its large sleigh bed, is light and airy with a view of the gardens at the back of the house. The Balcony room has a queen sized bed and a Dutch door leading out to the balcony. Enjoy a breakfast out here, evening cocktails or lounge away the day with a good read from their selection of books.
There are perfect spots to unwind all around the house. Downstairs there are two rooms with comfy couches to curl up with a good book…, or even take an afternoon snooze. A screened in porch is a delightful spot to have breakfast or just to be still and rejuvenate. Maybe you’d rather be out on the deck in the back of the house or under the large magnolia tree.

Miss Emily’s is a idyllic place for intimate weddings, an idea spot for a business or group meeting or a weekend getaway from the rat race! If you are having out of town visitors and don’t have enough room at your house, this is a wonderful solution; far better than sending them to a motel!
Whatever your reason for choosing Miss Emily’s, Necia and Brian will surely make your stay special. Even my brief visit made me wish I could linger for a few days. This is a truly enchanting, warm and welcoming home.

Commentary on the benefits of Chiropractic. PLEASE NOTE: This was not solicited by Community Chiro; it is my OWN experiences with the modality in over 35 years.
I have been going to Chiropractors since about 1973. At first I was very skeptical but over the years I have become convinced that it has vastly improved the quality of my life.
We have been brainwashed by the conventional medical establishment that drugs are the way to go to solve all of our medical concerns. While I acknowledge the tremendous advancements and benefits that modern medicine has afforded us, we have become a nation of pill poppers. Pills only cover up – not cure – what is wrong!
Television ads advise to ‘see our doctor’ for a variety of conditions. If we get a headache, have a sore back or arthritic joints, we run for the medicine cabinet. Doctor’s offices have become so overloaded that physicians routinely scribble out prescriptions to “cure” what ails us rather than to take the time to find out the underlying cause.
There was a sign in the office of one of my former chiropractors. It said:
FIVE DANGEROUS WORDS: “Maybe it will go away.”
Our bodies were designed to heal themselves. Along with a positive mental attitude, proper diet, exercise and practices which help our body help itself. If you have never tried Chiropractic, and have found that conventional treatments aren’t working, it might be time to go see someone like Dr. Matt and Diane.
They also offer the AQUA DETOX sessions (a trial session is free) which is an excellent way of removing toxins and inflammation from your body.
I have experienced a drastic reduction in pain of fibromyalgia and arthritis. I never thought that ever again in my life, I would be as pain free as I am today. I am totally convinced that between my visits to Dr. Matt –AND-the detox sessions, it has truly helped me! For more information, go to www.aquadetoxusa.com
