Now Ask Me Anything About The White Stripes! Anything At All!

What is Jack and Meg’s Relationship?

Dude, you know I can’t give you a proper answer. There are many rumours on what’s going on. Both Jack and Meg have been quoted on saying that they are brother and sister but some people believe that they are a divorced couple, I did once hear that they are Kissing Cousins. I personal believe that they are were married because someone put their divorced certified on the internet, Jack also is from a different part of Detroit from Meg. Jack White Isn’t even Jack original name. But may I just Point out that if Jack and Meg don't want people to know their personal business, then we should be good fans and try to keep out fat noses out of their personal lives.

So Why Can’t We Get A Straight Answer From TWS About Their Relationship?

The reason that TWS don’t give a straight answer is because Jack and Meg hate when people gossip and they don’t see why people need to know about their business.

What’s With The Red, White And Black Thing?

I heard that Jack and Meg Went into a Chemist and saw a Candle that had the Colours Red, White and Black on it, and they just knew that they were their colours. But I also heard that they took the colours from their favourite Sweets “peppermints”, which is propably the pony to put your money on.

Do the Colours Stand for anything?

Red symbolizes anger, White Symbolizes Innocence, and the Black stands for the Death of The Sweetheart. ahhh.

How Many Albums Have They Made?

The Stripes have 4 Albums:

1ST  -The White Stripes (1999)

2nd – De Stijl (2000)

3rd – Red Blood Cells (2001)

4th – Elephant (2003)

Do They Have Another Album Comin Out?

A date hasn't Officially been set yet, but there are a lot of rumors that the date of release is the 14th June.

Where Can I Find Their Albums?

I can’t do everything for you!

OK, OK, Where Did the Name De Stijl Come From?

Back at Mad Genius Jack White’s old job as a Up-Holster, he once took the back off a sofa and there was a pattern. He was told that it was De Stijl (a German Art Movement), so Jack name their 2nd Album after it. De Stijl is actually german for The Style.

What Other Jobs Did They Have?

Meg trained to be a Caterer and worked as a Bartender. After High school Jack trained to be a Film Director, but he felt that the business was too full of egos and quit. The all knowing and powerful Jack White Started to Up-Holster (I can't spell) when he was 15. But he got into a Big fight with his boss and quit. He then started his own business.

Talking About Big Fights...

All I think anyone needs to know om this subject of Jack and his fight with Jason Von Bondie is to look at the following Picture and to read this quote from Jack:

Jason Von Bondie after the bar brawl with Jack White

Jason Von Bondie after his brawl with Jack

"let me first say that the reason for me not giving out information about this incident was an attempt to keep from giving jason what he wanted: recognition and fame from negativity. and i still don't want to talk about this for fear of them getting more yardage from it, but i'll try to sort out some of the lies. the entire event was completely exploited by him, his band, and his managers and legal professionals. the two of us did have an argument. and i did spit at him. but what he doesn't say is how he then grabbed me to pull me down and pulled out a good deal of my hair. my retaliation was to hit him to get him off of me. then he landed on my hand, which became cut on the broken glass underneath it. the whole thing lasted less than ten seconds. the photo that jason insisted on having taken (BEFORE the ambulance he called came to get him to take him ONE BLOCK away to the hospital,) was sent to the nme magazine THE NEXT MORNING with the photo credit being that of the von bondies manager rick canni. jason would not allow the dried blood from his bloody nose washed from his face before taking the photo. take a look at it again. it's a black eye once you wash the dried blood off. his face isn't full of cuts. the "permanent damage" that he claims was done to his eye from this is also false. having toured extensively with the man i know that he would refuse to drive the touring van because as a teenager jason left a contact lens in his eye for over a year and then tried to pull it out! he tore his eye in doing so. so jason said he could never drive the van because of his eye! sounded more like laziness to the rest of us. it's the same eye he tried to blame me for permanently damaging. all lies. so ridiculous. the whole thing was this. in jason's mind if he made me out to look like i 'ATTACKED HIM BRUTALLY' and he played the victim the whole time, then his name would get well known and the name of his bands, while mine was "dragged through the mud". he had been doing it to me for almost two years at that point. spreading lies and gossip to friends and especially the press. all of the detroit music scene were laughing at the von bondies by this point. remember also that the band was just about to release their album. so it was perfect timing for them. it's so funny that when the aroma of money and fame is in the air old friends will quickly step on your face to get to it. i was so nice to jason and his band you wouldn't believe it. i let them rehearse in my house for free. i got them signed. i produced their album for free. i didn't credit myself on their album for singing, playing guitar, organ, piano, tambourine, etc. out of respect, we took them on sold out tours around the world where i paid for their plane tickets and food out of my own pocket. but none of that matters when fame and money come into the picture. i really tried to talk to jason, over and over again. i called him several times to ask why he was doing this to me and meg, i tried talking, arguing, ignoring, and forgiving. but nothing would stop him from using me like this. it was me trying to be rational with an irrational person. violence is a ridiculous notion. and i would never walk up to someone with the intent to inflict pain on them. but i'm not going to let someone do the same to me without protecting myself.
it really saddened my to see that a lot of people were believing his lies. but the more you repeat something the more people believe it. if you keep saying it, it becomes true. like how my car accident was in a porsche. that's funny because i remember it being in a ford!"

I also heard something about Jack and Ryan Adams…

I haven’t heard much about this but I think it goes something like, Ryan Adams said something about bad about Jack, Jack said something back to Ryan, and this continued. But Ryan doesn’t hate the White Stripes; he thanked Meg for saving Rock n’ Roll in inside of his Gold CD cover. It really wasn't a big fight and wasn't that important really.

Another of Jack's Enemies

What Is Black Maths About?

Black Maths is about a Maths teacher that Big Boss Man Jack had when he was younger. Jack felt that the teacher was only interested in them doing well in tests and not the class actually learning anything. So Jack went to the teacher and dropped his books on the teacher’s desk and refused to learn anything from him.

And What About Fell In Love With A Girl?

Use Your Heads! It’s about Jack falling in love with a girl. But for you who don’t know the girl is Marcie Bolen From The Von Bondies. And no, I don’t know who Bobby is!

Where Did the Name Come From?

I’ve head a few people telling me different things about where the name came from! One of them was that the band was named after a Zebra crossing that was just down the street from were they used to live. Also, they may be named after the stripes on the American Sweet ‘Peppermint’. I would really say that it's the second one, but really, it's a take your pick answer!

What Style of Music are they?

Well Jack once said that they were Garage Rock, beccause of the popular Garage Rock Music Scene that was Circluaring at the time. They are really the only real grage Rovk Band has really made it big, the rest of them have disappeared.

When did they form?

They form on the 14th of July in 1997. That is Bastille Day if my memory serves me right. That was the day they first official jammed.

What label are they under?

I believe that they are under the XL Record Label!

What's with this whole Megbot Thingee?

Oh, don't you know Meg is actually dead, and Jack replaced her with a Robot! It's one of the best TWS rumors that is on the internet at the moment, you check out the website it's on the Links page.

Do The Stripes Have any Rock Star Fans?

Of course they have some Rock star Fans. Firstly there are most of the New Bands that are coming out of Detroit at the Moment, Because TWS are really helping put Detroit Music back on the map. They have featured in their songs and Helped Produce them, thse include Electric Six, The Von Bondies and The Soledad Brothers. The Flaming Lips (Who Rock) are Also Fans, the Flaming Lips and TWS are actually really good friends. And when Jack Broke his finger in 2003, The Flaming Lips replaced them on the Fesivals, and did a extremely cool cover of Seven Nation Army while dressed in Red, White and Black!

Weezer also had The Stripes Supporting them when they were under their (Weezer) Name of 'Goat Punishment'!

I feel I also have to point out that British Pop Princess Rachel Stevens said thet Seven Nation Army was her 2nd Favourite song of 2003!

Plus in an Interview Jason Von Bondie was quoted on saying that he loves the White Stripes, it's just this on guy in it he doesn't like!

How old are Jack and Meg White?

Meg is 30 years old and was born on the 10th December 1974. Jack is also 29 years old and he was born on the 9th July 1975.

When will The White Stripes be Touring Canada Agian?

The Haven't Made any Plans to go on any Major Tours at the moment and are at the moment are just Road Testing their new Material. I'm sure that when they tour to promote the album they will tour canada.

How do Jack and Meg the cover Joss Stone did of "Fell in Love with a Girl", now she has changed the words to "Fell in Love With A Boy"?

I happen to know that Jack and Meg do like to cover of Fell in Love with a Girl that Joss Stone did. Even Joss Stone wasn't to sure if they'd like it, but when she was asked about the White Stripes and if she know if she liked it, her answer:

"They were in my hotel in New York... and they were outside having a cigarette. The first thing I said to Jack was, "I'm so sorry... for messing up your song" cos I wasn't sure that he would like it, but he said he loves it. They play it like that in their set now."

When Will The White Stripes DVD be comin out?

The DVD is called "The White Stripes under Blackpool Lights", and its out dude!

Where can we get it?

I really can't answer EVERYTHING for you, I sure it won't hurt to do some research yourself!

What are the lyrics to 'Jack the Ripper'?

I’m walking down the street, late at night.
Jack the ripper…Jack the ripper.

Fools little gold and suffer a little here.
Jack the ripper…Jack the ripper.

Hey…peck and lonely
I said “let go o’ me”
Got by me, back and forth and almost got me.
Jack the ripper…Jack the ripper.

Why Does Jack White have so many Amps? Greedy?

I know NOTHING about sound equipment! But I think it has something to do with different sound and how big the venue is!?

When wil the White Stripesbe touring the US and more importantly when will they be playing Philadelphia?

Like I said above, there are no plans for major tours until after the Album is released!

Why did The White Stripes do a cover of Joss Stones 'Fell in Love With a Boy'?

Things To Look Out For....
  1. In the DVD Jack somethings has Obnoxious Written on His Arm and sometimes he has Noxious. The words are differnet because they filmed on two different nights, and the director had to make sure that they were wearing the same things everynight, it was actually Megs that wrote it on Jacks Arm, to play with the director!
  2. If you watch to the VERY end of the gig, you can just about make out Jack saying "Why don't we split the Money 50/50", But it doesn't work if go to the very end though the Menu!
  3. In Dead Leaves On the Dirty Ground, you can see something Flying Behind Jack.
  4. During Let's Shake Hands (I think, Not too Sure) Jack get Hit by a shoe, falls stumbles bck and hits Meg, thats wjy you can see her holding her Face.
  5. While the credits go up in the you can see Jack and Meg Dancing (as you all know), but I never knew they could Dance so well.
  6. If you are thinking Megs Looked a Little rough while on stage, its because she was Playing the Drums for an hour and a half, but also because all the way though the Tour they were on, she was sick!

Well, we all Know that the Website kicks Ass, but I think thaat it is only fair if we let other people have a say on wha they think so heres the critics...

From Amazon.com

Recorded in Blackpool, England's Empress Ballroom in January 2004 with 8mm cameras, the White Stripes' Under Blackpool Lights comes dang close to capturing the feel of their live show. The band has always eschewed the modern contrivances of digital music-making, opting for vintage guitars, a trap kit, and tube amps to lay down their synthesis of Americana and British invasion fuzz. The grainy film stock is the perfect visual complement to the peals of feedback and strong-armed beats the band delivers in 26 tunes that keep the audience bouncing. Highlights include a cover of Dolly Parton's "Jolene," Leadbelly's "De Ballit of de Boll Weevil," and the band's own "Ball and Biscuit" and "Seven Nation Army." Fans who cherish the songs in this set on CD (or, better yet, vinyl) are in for a treat as every number is reinterpreted, with Jack White mining for new licks and singing like he's imbibing on a secret stash of Howlin' Wolf's moonshine. Meg, stomping her bass drum barefoot, has never looked or sounded as confident behind her kit, especially when she plays whole songs--literally, folks--with one hand behind her back. The disc contains no extras to speak of, just wall-to-wall rock, but true disciples of the Stripes won't leave disappointed. --Ryan Boudinot

From BBC Gloucestershire Films

Jack and Meg White get lost in music in this concert footage documentary, shot during the Detroit duo's January 2004 concert at The Empress Ballroom in Blackpool. Complementing the band's stripped down bluesy sound, it's a straightforward outing that follows the band as they thrash their way through a 26 song set. There's no backstage access, no interviews, no glitz or glamour, just 80 minutes of Jack and his ex-wife/'sister' Meg doing what they do best.

The concert director Dick Carruthers is a veteran at filming live performances, having previously worked with Portishead, Led Zeppelin and The Who. He shoots in grainy colours, giving Under Blackpool Lights the feel of an illicit bootleg video, and it proves the perfect medium for such consummate no-nonsense musicians as the Stripes: their blend of blues and punk doesn't need much in the way of frills since it's the pared down chords that count.

"A THUNDER FLASH OF SEXED-UP ENERGY"

"I'm in the right place at the wrong time," quips Jack in a rare moment of conversation with the assembled fans. "That's how I feel every day," he adds, before launching into an exquisite cover of Dolly Parton's Jolene. Other songs are more familiar, spanning all three of the band's albums. There's a superb rendition of Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground and I Think I Smell A Rat (which still sounds like an escapee from the Pulp Fiction soundtrack), plus plenty of other instant classics, from Ball And Biscuit to Hotel Yorba and Hello Operator.

Bursting onto the stage in a thunder flash of sexed-up energy - Meg orgasmically pounding the drums, Jack striding around in too-tight red/black jeans - the Stripes delve into the throbbing heart of their guitar'n'drums sound. It's an exhilaratingly electric set that drives like a juggernaut towards the inevitable encore-ender: a dazzling rendition of the thrash rock classic Seven Nation Army. --Jamie Russell

Where are all the haters? Shouldn’t Detroit’s favorite fake siblings be fending off wave after wave of pissy scenesters with their peppermint sticks? Shouldn’t we all be a bit tired of these fashion freaks, with all their movie-star-datin’, rock-star-punchin’, blues-worshipin’ bullshit?

Watching Dick Carruthers’s Under Blackpool Lights, a film capturing the White Stripes live at the Empress Ballroom in Blackpool, England last January, I am reminded why these two have so stubbornly resisted much of the backlash that seemed destined to befall them after the media orgy that engulfed all of us during the release of last year’s Elephant. Jack and Meg White have more charisma, more balls, in a single strand of their jet-black hair than most rock musicians these days could find in their entire bodies. Quite simply, it is the timeless strength of Jack’s songs and the piston-fire energy of their stage chemistry that have kept their music above the media’s tireless din and kept most of the haters at bay.

Shot in 8 and 16mm film, Carruthers’s rustic camera work does justice to the Stripes’ minimalist fetishes: their trap kits, Eisenhower-era guitars, simple black and red outfits, and three-chord songs. Although a few more shots of the Empress’ impressive interiors or the crowd’s manic surges would have been nice, Carruthers does manage to catch some nifty details, such as Meg’s bare-feet on the kick-drum, without ever losing sight of the performance’s ebb and flow.

And that, despite Carruthers’s impressive resume, including live films featuring Portishead and Oasis, is what Under Blackpool Lights is all about. Carruthers’s position regarding the Stripes’ saturnalia doesn’t enter into the picture, but thankfully, Jack and Meg keep things interesting enough on their own. On each of Jack’s wide-eyed cues, the Stripes jumped from one song to the next without a set list, transforming a slew of originals and the odd covers into extended, feedback-drenched medleys -- requiems to the Americana the Stripes reinvent every time they step onstage. The schoolyard anthem “I Think I Smell a Rat” from 2001’s White Blood Cells, for example, dove headlong into Jack’s manic vocal-only rendition of Huddie Ledbetter’s cocaine-fable “Take a Whiff On Me” without a hint of hesitation.

Underpinning all this mayhem, of course, is Jack’s candy-colored guitar. While Meg is unquestionably one of the most underrated drummers in the business and much more than a parrot on Jack’s bulging shoulder, it is that red demon our man keeps slung between his legs that keeps that train a-rollin’. Classics like “Ball and Biscuit” and Blind Willie McTell’s “Death Letter” became new, more terrifying beasts, the former shattered by Jack’s squealing pitch-shifter and the latter turbo-charged with his ruthless slide-playing.

Carruthers’s live document of one of the new millennium’s most mythologized rock acts is really nothing more than that -- a well-captured slice of the Stripes on stage and on fire, but it’s certainly no Don’t Look Back. It’s unfortunate that we aren’t treated to deeper insights. For such a mysterious band (yes, Jack continues to refer to his partner as his “sister”), some backstage interviews or shots of the two bumming around Blackpool and playing the slots would have been rewarding. Still, Under Blackpool Lights, packs a hefty punch and provides ample reason why the White Stripes keep turning heads.  --John MacDonald
