The Truth 4 Kids

Baby Opossum Orphans

On March 30, 2008, I was very privilleged to help rescue three baby possum orphans.

The story started when I was driving to church Sunday morning. I heard my dad say, "Guys, look out the window." So, my brother Jarret, my sister Julianne, and I looked out the window to see a dead mother possum with a dead baby possum right next to her. We told dad to stop the car and we found another dead possum a couple feet away. It was being eaten by fire ants...We looked around and saw two babies, barely alive. "Dad, we have to help them!" Julianne told dad. "We can't, we'll be able to keep them alive a few days but they'll suffer even more than just dying quickly." So, we drove to church and Julianne raced to go find a friend that knew how to take care of hurt or injured animals. We found him and asked him if he wanted to take care of them. He said yes so we drove back and got them. Dad told us to look around to see if there were any more and we found another! With three possums in our hands, we drove to our house (which was right down the street) and got a towel and a box. We put the towel down and set the possums in it. We put the towel on top to keep them warm. We gave them to our friend and he is now taking care of them and will let them go when they are older.

Yesterday after Karate, we drove to their house and got to help feed them, etc. They have to be fed every couple hours! We fed them with spoons! They are SOOO cute!!! Click on the link below to watch the YouTube video:

Wondering how they're doing? They're almost a month old now. They are pretty big. Now, with help, they are climbing some trees. Wondering how they look? Well, next time I get a chance to see them, I will TRY to get another video to put on here.

They are now about nine weeks old (three months). They will be released in about a 2 weeks. I'm sure they will be happier in the wild. I will miss them. I see them often. They are HUGE!!!

Tonight we will release the "not so baby anymore" possums. We will go and watch. Maybe, we might record it so you can see how big they are! Later!

We released the baby possums today. It was sad to see them go but I know that they are happier where they are right now. As soon as we let them go, one wandered off in one direction, one in another direction, and the other possum went off in the other direction. Blue swam across the little creek and Jane started to climb a tree! Red just went off and hid in the bushes, though.
