I would say my sound is a romantic sound...it's water...it's ocean...it's tranquility."
More than any other singer, Jon Lucien captures the essence of romance. His voice is rich and expressive, his best songs are perceptive poetic tales of devotion, trust, hope, harmony and spirituality. Three dimensional parables of love lost and love found and relationships filled with the promise of a new day. He seems to possess an innate ability to evoke an atmosphere and create images not only through his lyrics but the colors of his music.

He has been an important part of the New York music scene for more than 25 years, playing in jazz clubs, forming his own groups, helping write the script for what he calls America’s native or classic music. And lately he’s been a musical ambassador, making two trips to Beirut this year, performing at a jazz festival in Oslo, and traveling to Paris and Hamburg." Robert Laux-Bachand

Higher Ground is T.S. Monk’s first new album in over three years. And it’s a welcome return, bringing the venerable drummer back to jazz’s forefront. Additionally, it marks the debut of Monk’s own record label, Thelonious Records, which will work in conjunction with HYENA for future releases that include “live” concert recordings of his father Thelonious Monk. While it might seem as if T.S. has been away for far too long, he’s actually been hard at work wood-shedding his septet into one of the finest working bands in jazz. Higher Ground bears truth to that with its kinetic and infectious interplay, focusing on a variety of his bandmates compositions, including the beautiful and breezy “Ladera Heights” and the hard bop groove of “Craw-Daddy.” Guest vocalist Miles Griffith also contributes on the Cedar Walton compostion, “Mosaic,” for a brilliant slice of vocalese. One of jazz music’s most viable band leaders, as well as a previous Downbeat Reader’s Poll winner for “Drummer of the Year,” T.S. Monk is back and ready to reclaim his spot atop contemporary jazz’s illustrious hill.
HighNote CD 7135 David 'Fathead' Newman I Remember Brother Ray $13.00 Order
"If I had focused on sax instead of singing and playing piano, I would have wanted to sound like ‘Fathead’," Ray Charles told an interviewer in 1977. "’Fathead’ has the sound, the soul and the melodic mind that make him a jazz giant. He was an important part of my music, and I'm happy I met him so early on." This was Ray Charles' spoken tribute to David Newman. Now, David Newman pays tribute to his former boss in his latest HighNote disc, "I Remember Brother Ray." Featuring eight tunes David played with Ray Charles at the height of his popularity, David and sidemen Steve Nelson on vibes, John Menegon on bass, Winard Harper on drums, and John Hicks ably filling the piano seat, this is at once a touching, swinging and heart-felt tribute from one jazz great to another.
with Steve Nelson, vibes; John Hicks, piano; John Menegon, bass; Winard Harper, drums .
Tracks: Hit the Road Jack; Georgia On My Mind; When Your Lover Has Gone; Drown in My Tears; Deed I Do; It Had To Be You; Ruby; Them That Got.
HighNote HCD 7046 John Hicks Impressions of Mary Lou $13.00 Order
John Hicks possesses a very unique talent as a pianist, and that is the ability to assimilate the essence of other players and merge it with his own creativity and come up with a sound that is totally his own, yet reminiscent of the other player. He exhibited this talent on his previous HighNote recordings "Something to Live For" and "Nightwind" and he does so once again on his latest. This time John pays tribute to the under-appreciated Mary Lou Williams, whose music is only today being recognized as some of the most forward looking music of its time.
John Hick- piano; Dwayne Dolphin- bass; Cecil Brooks III- drums
Tracks: Lord have Mercy; Ballad for Mary Lou; O.W.; Old Time Spiritual; Mary Lou's Interlude; Medi II; Not Just Your Blues; Intermission; Not Too Straight; Two For You; "Aries" from The Zodiac Suite; The Lord Says.
Available in softbound and electronic form for only $29.95 US
