History of the Protoss

In stark contrast to the adaptive Terrans and feral Zerg are the stolid, conservative Protoss. With their highly advanced technology and potent psionic abilities, the Protoss have long considered themselves the most powerful species in the known galaxy. Although they are not a prolific people, they have learned to bolster the ranks of their military with robotic war machines and to combine their intrinsic psionic ability with technology, thus producing some of the most effective warriors ever known. If the Protoss have a weakness, though, it is their refusal to accept change. The tenets of their major religion, known as the Khala, form a rigid path and the Protoss are loathe to deviate from it for fear of once again falling into civil strife.

Although the Protoss were originally divided into several warring tribes, they were united by a single scholar/philosopher known as Khas, or "he who brings order". Having studied the archaic, forbidden teachings of his ancestors, this mystic unearthed ancient, monolithic artifacts known as the Khaydarin Crystals. The power contained within these crystals -- along with his teachings -- are apparently responsible for the strengthening of the primordial, psychic link that all Protoss share. Khas also developed a strict religious, philosophical, and social structure christened the Khala. Under the Khala -- which translates roughly to Path of Ascension -- the Protoss have abandoned the crude tribal factions that led them into generations of vicious blood feuds and have instead created three castes: The Khalai (artisans and inventors), The Templar, (warriors and explorers) and The Judicator (administrators and leaders).

Terran dealings with the Protoss have been limited, restricting their knowledge of the Protoss' language, abilities and equipment. What they do know is that they possess extremely advanced technology, including warp-gate manipulation, energy shield generation and the ability to power their buildings and units with a Psionic Matrix. It is only recently that significant progress has been made in learning more of their secretive society and science, and this has come at the cost of millions of Terran lives.

The (first) Battle for Survival

The Protoss have been known for ages as a peaceful and proud race. The Protoss had been sharing space with their Terran neighbors for decades; as resources ran short, however, these Confederate nations started looking towards the rich worlds of their alien neighbors, the enigmatic Protoss. The Protoss were not about to allow the invading Terrans to steal their resources, thus causing a minor conflict to begin along the borders planets. To further complicate matters, it seems that a previously unknown and deadly species known only as the Zerg had entered Protoss space, which is bent only on destroying everything in its path. The time for a great war had come...

The Protoss warriors were able to fight back the Terran invaders as well as defeat the Zerg Overmind. The Overmind was responsible for controlling the Zerg broods and after its destruction the Zerg hives began to run amok. The Defeat of the Overmind, however, did not come without a great sacrifice for the mighty Protoss warriors. Many Protoss had been killed in the chaos. The remains of the dead were being placed into Dragoon exoskeletons to continue serving their cause. One great Protoss was slain in the final battle against the Zerg Overmind, his name was Tassadar. This great teacher and leader of his people sacrificed himself and his beloved capitol ship, the Gantrithor, in order to destroy the Overmind.

After the dust had settled the Protoss were left to a broken home world which needed to be rebuilt. The Protoss had made the decision to reunite with their Dark Templar brethren in order to bring their efforts together in rebuilding their home world, Aiur.

The (second) Battle for Survival

The Protoss were busy rebuilding their home world when the Dark Templar Matriarch Raszagal made a bargain with the Queen of Blades (AKA Kerrigan). Kerrigan needed the help of the protoss in order to be rid herself of the newly formed Overmind. Several of the cerebrates had merged together in order to revive the Overmind. The rest of the protoss were not pleased with the decision but they too wanted to prevent the creation of the new Overmind so they reluctantly agreed  to work with Kerrigan.

It was not long before the Protoss discovered Kerrigan's true motives. With the help of the Protoss and Terran, Kerrigan was able to defeat the Overmind. Shortly after the victory Kerrigan struck her former allies with their backs turned. Kerrigan was able to defeat General Duke as well as the mightiest Protoss warrior Fenix. The Protoss now needed to regroup.

With the terrible and unsuspected death of the beloved war hero Fenix, came the need for a new Praetor of the Protoss Defense Forces. The Protoss were going to strike back with a vengeance but they required a strong military leader to do so. A young protoss (262 years) going by the name of Artanis was selected for the position of Praetor.

Under the leadership of Artanis a final assault on Kerrigan was launched at her while her defenses were low. The Protoss were assisted by the remains of the Sons of Korhal and the United Earth Directorate. After a long battle Kerrigan emerged victorious. The Protoss were forced to retreat and regroup once again. What was left of their once magnificent legacy would band together, both Templar and Dark Templar, in order to survive the coming future ahead lingering behind the horizon.

The Survivors

The few survivors of the onslaught traveled back to their home planet of Aiur and quickly spread the news. Something needed to be done, and done extremely soon. Should Kerrigan follow them back with her few remaining forces she could establish an unchecked base directly on the surface of the planet. A new approach needed to be made and the few remaining heroes needed to step up and lead their people.

The Survivors of Aiur

The Last few heroes of Aiur, Artanis, Zeratual, and Fenix, formed The S.O.A. in order to prepare their planet incase of attack. Their goal was to prevent the vial Zerg from returning to their planet and one day retake every planet lost to the Zerg menace.

The Survivors of Aiur began immediate construction of a massive fleet of ships. They were going to try to prevent a ground invasion by stopping it before it ever reached the surface of Aiur. Within 2 weeks a grand fleet of 500 Carriers, 1000 Scouts, 250 Corsairs, and 50 Arbiters were completed. The Protoss were prepared for the invasion but Kerrigan never came. Each class of ships contained one well known hero who would take command if contact with the others was was lost. Templar Aurioch leads the Venetir Scouts, Templar Khrillian leads the Airun Corsairs, Executor Damiarch leads the Carrier Tempest, and Judicator Assmael leads the Arbiter Serenity. These last few warriors called themselves The Survivors of Aiur.

The Survivors of Aiur (Cont.)

The S.O.A. decided not to wait in fear for Kerrigan to return. They unanimously decided to strike before she did. Should Kerrigan wish to strike the Protoss she would be easily lured out to protect her colonies. The Protoss swept through the galaxy moving from one fallen planet to the next, liberating it. The Zerg resistance was minimal and the Protoss were becoming even more powerful for every planet that they acquired. each planet taken was named after a former Protoss tribe in honor of their service to their people. 33 planets were taken in all during the 4 year period of silence. Each planet taken was re-colonized by the exploring Protoss. 15 of these planets were originally protoss planets and 18 were former Terran planets.

The Years have passed and the Protoss have gained tremendous power. New technology has been researched and their readiness for battle has greatly increased. The Protoss population decreased by 75% during the two great wars and over these past 4 years has tripled its former size. The colonies continue to grow in size and wealth. Every planet has part in the great Counsel on Shakuras. The counsel meats inside the mystical monument known only as the Xel'Naga Temple. The ancient power within the temple has been studied tremendously by the Protoss since its first use during the second great war. The same technology used to purge the planet of the vile Zerg scum, can now be identified on the newest Carrier design. A super concentrated beam can now be fired at a planet to wipe it clean of its inhabitants...the Protoss plan a massive assault on the still Zerg infested home world of Char.
