This is the Gym Guide for Pokemon Red and Blue Gyms.
Pewter City Gym

Gym Leader Brock
Team Lv. 12 Geodude Lv. 14 Onix
This gym is the first gym lead by Brock the Gym leader. He mainly uses Rock Type Pokemon so he will be an easy person to defeat if you started out with either Bulbasaur or Squirtle. A vine whip or a bubble attack from either, respectiveley, it will send his pokemon fainting as they have a 4x weakness to them. The real problem is if you chose Charmander, then I suggest you catch a Caterpie at the Viridian Forest and evolve it to Butterfree, with the move confusion. I also suggest you capture a Pidgey and really level up your charmander and evolve it. Geodude can be defeated with a Charmeleon's ember, but it might take a few turns. For Onix first send out Pidgey and give your Charmeleon a potion, if Pidgey survives that turn then start using sand attack to reduce Onix's accuracy, don't do anything else, when pidgey faints send put Butterfree and use Confusion and defeat Onix.
Beat him and you will get the Boulder badge and the TM for the move Bide.
Cerulean City Gym

Gym Leader Misty
Team Lv 18 Staryu Lv 21 Starmie
This gym specialises in water types, and Misty can be quite an obstacle. If you chose Bulbasaur and it has evolved into Ivysaur this battle is a synch. Vine whip will show her Starfish Pokemon stars. If you chose Squirtle, it might be a bit of a problem, and if you chose charmander say sayonara cause you will get owned by her water pokemon. In the above two cases I suggest you either catch and level up a Pikachu from Viridian Forest, or catch either Bellsprout or Oddish(depending on your game) and level them up or do both. The Grass moves will wipe out Staryu, but Starmie might take a while so keep trying, it will be sure to faint in a while, just remember to keep many potions handy.
Beat her and you have just earned the Cascade basge and got the TM for the move Bubblebeam.
Viridian City Gym

Gym Leader Lt. Surge
Team Lv 21 Voltorb Lv 18 Pikachu Lv 24 Raichu
This gym is powered by electricity, literally. Lt Surge can be quite shocking, again literally. :P For this battle I suggest you raise Geodude and teach it Dig, or catch a Digglet or Dugtrio with dig, will make the battle easier. Plus bring plenty of paralyze heals, and Squirtle will be pathetic in this match, Bulbasau will have a slight resistance and Charmander is average. Just get a pokemon with dig to screw his team and train it up to lv 25.
Beat him for the Thunder Badge and get the TM for thunderbolt
Celadon City Gym

Gym Leader Erika
Team Lv 29 Victreebell Lv 24 Tangela Lv 29 Vileplume
Well Erika uses her beautifull Grass Pokemon with a dangerous edge. If you have a Charmeleon/Charizard this match will be a breeze. An Acid attack from Bellsprout or Oddish(the ones you used against Misty) can decimate Tangela if the level is high enough. Also Ground moves from the pokemon(You used against Surge) can do damage to Victreebell and Vileplume, but be carefull cause they are weal to grass. Also catch an Abra, evolve it to Kadabra and use it Pshycic moves against their Poison types.
Beat her and earn the Rainbow Badge and the TM for Mega Drain.
Fuschia City Gym

Gym Leader Koga
Team Lv 37 Koffing Lv 39 Muk Lv 37 Koffing Lv 43 Weezing
Koga and his Poisonous pokemon are shrouded in mystery(he is a ninja) and are quite fearsome, but with some strategy he can be pwned. Use a ground Pokemon with moves like Earthquake or Dig, to defeat Muk, Koffing and Weezing. A pshycic type attack can reduce them too. Stay on your gaurd for the move self destruct though it faints the user but can damage you too. Keep many Antidotes with you.
Beat him, get the Soul Badge and the TM for the move Toxic.
Saffron City Gym

Gym Leader Sabrina
Team Lv 38 Kadabra Lv 37 Mr.Mime Lv 28 Venomoth Lv 43 Alakazam
Arguably one of the toughest gym leaders, Sabrina and her Pshycic pokemon are quite invincible. Venomoth can be defeated with a Fire move. And really strong pokemon might manage to take down Mr. Mime but I suggest you catch a Ghost pokemon for Kadabra or Alakazam, the problem with R/B is that the only ghost pokemon available are part poison hence weak to Pshycic pokemon. Night shade may do major damage on them, but this match has to be taken really seriously, and you need top notch pokemon to defeat her.
If you beat her(congrats on that!!) you get the Marsh Badge and the TM for the move Psywave.
Cinnibar Island Gym

Gym Leader Blaine
Team Lv 42 Growlithe Lv 40 Ponyta Lv 42 Rapidash Lv 47 Arcanine
Compared to the difficulty you might have had with Sabrina, Blaine and his fire pokemon are quite easy. If you chose Squirtle at the beggining, Blastoise can wreck his team. Other Water Pokemon like Gyarados and Poliwrath can be usefull here too. Your Graveller/Golem can be a devastating pokemon to Blaine as well. All in all if your team has a few water pokemon at level 45 or above this battle is a piece of cake.
Defeat him for the Volcano Badge and the TM for the move Fire Blast.
Viridian City Gym

Gym Leader Giovanni
Team Lv 45 Rhyhorn Lv 42 Dugtrio Lv 44 Nidoqueen Lv 45 Nidoking Lv 50 Rhydon
Yes its true, Team Rocket leader Giovanni is the Gym Leader of the Viridian City Gym, but to be honest he and his team of ground pokemon are a joke. Rhyhorn, Rhydon and Dugtrio can be defeated in a matter of minutes by Venusaur, Blastoise or Lapras. Also Nidoking and Nidoqueen can be owned by Lapras, both its Ice moves and Water moves are Super Effective, but Grass won't work on both the Nidos as they are Part Poison. Truly a dissapointing last Gym battle, in my opinion the final Gym Leader should have been Sabrina.
Anyway after owning his team collect the Earth Badge and the TM for the move Earthquake
Congratulations, if you defeated all the 8 Gym Leaders head on to the Elite Four.
