History of Reflexology

Thousands of years ago in China, the ancient Chinese practiced various forms of medicine quite different from those of the Western world. The most famous of these is acupuncture, this involves the placement of needles into certain areas of the body known as acupuncture points. These points are situated along lines known as meridian lines.

Reflexology is based on similar ideas to acupuncture in that there are energy lines linking the feet and the hands to the various body parts and the whole body can be treated by working on the reflex areas in the feet and hands. The energy lines of Reflexology are not, however, the same as the acupuncture meridian lines but the system obviously has its origins in these ancient Chinese therapies.

The earliest recording of a therapy in the form that Reflexology is known today is found in an Egyptian tomb drawing dating about 2330 BC, in which a person is shown holding a foot of another person and applying massage to the sole of the foot. Over the years, it has also been discovered that Reflexology was known to some of the primitive tribes of Africa and to the Red Indians. More recently, the two people responsible for documenting Reflexology as it is known were Dr William Fitzgerald and Mrs Eunice Ingham.

Reflexology - What is it all about?

REFLEXOLOGY is a method for activating the healing powers of the body.

Since ancient times, healers have employed various methodologies to strengthen and balance the energy flow. This energy flows in zones or meridians throughout the body and Reflexologists specify there are ten energy zones that run the length of the body from head to toe—five on each side of the body ending in each foot and running down the arms into the tips of the fingers. Not only do these zones run lengthwise, but they pass through the body, so that a zone located on the front of the body can also be reached from behind. All the organs and parts of the body lie along one or more of these zones.

TEN ZONES OF THE BODY

Reflexology Zones

The body’s good health depends on balance, equilibrium, the natural functioning of all the body systems—called homeostasis, Excessive stress can disrupt this balance. Reflexology can alleviate the effects of stress by inducing deep relaxation, allowing the nervous system to calm down and function more normally. Circulation proceeds smoothly, blood flow is improved, and oxygen reaches are cells and order and harmony are restored. The body returns to its natural rhythms. Energy flows, the body, mind and spirit are brought back into balance.
