Gary Day is one of Australia’s best known actors who after a career spanning 40 years, retired to New Zealand to pursue a new aspect of the arts.
Gary converted an old double garage into a studio into which he disappeared to thrash it out with some paintbrushes and old tools to see what they had to say for themselves. After 6 years he emerged and the results were brought to the attention of the renowned COCA - Centre of Contemporary Art in Christchurch New Zealand.
His first exhibition at COCA in August 2007 was a great success.
It is with great pleasure that these exciting artworks are now on show in the inaugural exhibition of The Picture House Gallery in Gunning.
As a kid growing up in New Zealand, Gary became obsessed with the movies and he has spent the last twenty years on location during film and television shoots fossicking through flea markets and collecting old classic movie posters.
The artworks in this exhibition, which come from original sources are hand painted, mounted on canvas and then framed by Gary himself with recycled materials that allude to the imagery and iconography of the times.
