The competition has now closed.

Thanks go to all people that entered. Unfortunately there can only be one winner, so congratulations must go to "Andy", the winner of a "goody pack" on South Australian Public Transport. Your prize will be sent to you shortly.

The questions (and answers) are:

  1. Where in South Australia is the platform photographed located? (A locality or suburb name is required here) Plympton (Near the corner of Marion Road and Mooringie Avenue)
  2. In which year was the line closed and the platform subsequently disused? 1929 (The last day of operation was 14 December 1929)
  3. What was the destination of the railway line that the train platform was loacted on? Glenelg

Here are the two photos:

The platform is the last physical remnant of the railway line that ran between the Adelaide Railway station on North Terrace and the beachside suburb of Glenelg. The line was opened in 1880 to act as competition to the railway operating to Glenelg from Victoria Square. The two railway companies merged in 1882 and the lines were taken over by the South Australian Railways in 1899. The Municipal Tramways Trust took over both lines in 1927, converting the other line to a tramway in 1929. This tramway still exists to this day. The railway that this platform was on was planned to be converted into a tramway, but plans were halted by development of the Great Depression in the 1930's. The remaining railway reservation, between South Road and Morphett road is now used as a bicycle path.
