The Orange Room Review

Accessible poetry of substance

Moving On

by Leah Browning

The homesickness starts early,
before we’ve even left
or made plans to leave.

A longing in my gut,
that of strong hands wringing
water from a wet towel.

Each summer day, stretching
idyllic into the next, full
of green grass on bare feet

and children laughing
and calling to one another;
the shade trees and ducks

as we walk on the riverside,
sun shining silver and blue
on the water:

everything becomes
poignant, painful,

as if I am already just
remembering it.  Fondly,
but from a great distance.
