The Gardener in Haying-Time

by Isaiah Vianese

First, the fields brimmed with grain to fell
and the orchards with their sweet fruit.
Then the gardens flowed green
and I worked gathering what I could,
baskets spilling over day after day,
week upon plump week.
And I thought, can winter really come
in a life as full as this?

ISAIAH VIANESE is author of the chapbook, Stopping on the Old Highway (recycled karma press, 2009). He grew up in upstate New York, and currently lives in Missouri.
