Chaos

Chaos

Chaos is the main villain in the video game Sonic Adventure for the Sega Dreamcast. He is a supernatural being that seems to be composed entirely of water and was trapped inside the Master Emerald. He was released by Dr. Robotnik in a bid to conquer the world. Whether Chaos was created or simply came into existence is not yet known.

Chaos' History

Chaos was originally kind hearted and served to protect the Chao and guard the Chaos Emeralds and the Master Emerald. However the leader of the echidna tribe, Pachacamac, tried to steal the Emeralds so he could use them against his enemies. They stormed the shrine where the Emeralds were and in the process killed many Chao. Chaos, in a fit of rage, killed them all by absorbing the power of the Chaos Emeralds. Pachacamac's daughter, Tikal, not wanting to see the world destroyed sealed herself and Chaos within the Master Emerald.

Present Day

Chaos laid in wait for many centuries until Dr. Robotnik, having read ancient tablets describing the fall of the echidnas and Chaos, released him by shattering the Master Emerald. Chaos swears to follow Robotnik as he knows that the Eggman can get the Chaos Emeralds back for him. Eventually however Robotnik's plans, like always, fall through at the hands of Sonic and his friends. So Chaos abandons him and collects the Emeralds himself. Once in his possession he absorbs the negative powers of the Emeralds and discards them. This proves to be the means to his downfall as Sonic absorbs the positive energies of the Emeralds and transforms into Super Sonic and eventually defeats him, in the process ridding Chaos of his evil mindset.

Chaos' Forms

Chaos has the ability to transform his shape and increase his strength with every Chaos Emerald that he absorbs.

Chaos 0
Chaos 0

Chaos 0

This is the base form of Chaos before he has absorbed any Chaos Emeralds. He is humanoid, about five feet tall with bright green eyes. You can see his brain through his watery exterior. Sonic fights Chaos 0 outside the City Hall in Station Square.

Chaos 1

This is Chaos after he has absorbed one Chaos Emerald. He is virtually unchanged except for a line of bones that travel down his right arm into his hand. He only appears briefly and you never get to fight him.

Chaos 2

Chaos 2
Chaos 2

Chaos 2 is now much stronger after absorbing two Emeralds. Chaos is now taller and more muscular. The bones that where in Chaos 1's right arm now run along both of Chaos 2's arms. His head has moved forward and gives him a meaner look, the horns on his head have also changed position to give him a Hammerhead style look. He has also developed new powers like a shield to prevent frontal attacks and the ability to transform into a huge ball of water. Knuckles the Echidna fights him in the Hotel Restaurant in Station Square.

Chaos 3

Chaos 3 never makes an appearance in Sonic Adventure because Chaos absorbs two Emeralds at once.

Chaos 4
Chaos 4

Chaos 4

Chaos changes completely after absorbing four Chaos Emeralds. He is now a huge shark like creature with razor like fins. He fights Sonic, Tails and Knuckles in a small pond in the Mystic Ruins but is defeated, His new powers include being able to shoot energy waves.

Chaos 5

Chaos 5, like Chaos 3, was never shown in Sonic Adventure due to the same circumstances of absorbing two Emeralds at once.

Chaos 6
Chaos 6

Chaos 6

After absorbing six emeralds Chaos has changed dramatically once again. He is now a twenty-five foot tall scorpion-like creature. He has six legs with his hind legs resembling that of a grasshopper. He also has eight or more eyes and a bulldog like head and a mouth filled with razor sharp teeth. Its tail is tipped with a pendulum type blade. Both Sonic and Knuckles fight Chaos 6 one after another on the Egg Carrier and Big the Cat fishes Froggy out from inside Chaos. Chaos' new powers include creating powerful shockwaves and trying to suck enemies up to eat them.

Perfect Chaos

Perfect Chaos

After absorbing the negative energies of all seven Chaos Emeralds Chaos has become a being of pure destruction. He has become a giant serpent like beast with a head like that of a moray eel with his mouth extending far beyond his eyes. His eyes, for the first time, have pupils that resemble a snake or reptiles'. At the base of his snake like body seems to be a huge whirlpool and cyclone. He has large tentacles extending from his base. Only Super Sonic had the power to take him down. Perfect Chaos' new powers include creating small tornados and firing a huge energy beam.

Comics

In the UK Sonic the Comic comics published by Fleetway Chaos is depicted as a much more intelligent beast. Rather than being captured within the Master Emerald, Chaos was actually imprisoned by Dr. Robotnik, however his assistant Grimer released him when he saw that Robotnik was depressed after losing to Sonic so many times. In the comics, Chaos has a 'fear factor' that makes anyone near him tremble with incredible fear when they are around him to the point where they fall to their knees petrified. Chaos also kills one of Sonic the Comic's longest running characters, Johnny Lightfoot. Unlike in the game, in the comic Chaos can talk and also unlike the game, Chaos is actually a transformed Drakon Guard, a group of fish-like creatures that were at war with the Echidnas. In following with the game, Chaos absorbs all seven Chaos Emeralds; however unlike in the games he is less like a snake more like a blob. (Not unlike Slime Monsters from Final Fantasy games, only bigger.) Eventually Super Sonic (who at this point in the comic is separate from normal Sonic) absorbs all of Chaos' energy and Chaos reverts back to his fish state. Coincidentally this is also Fleetway's last original story for Sonic the Comic.

In the Archie comic, Chaos's story closely mirrors that of his video game version, with the one exception that Chao are rare creatures in this story, and have been transformed into Super Emeralds. Upon being defeated by a combination of efforts from Super Sonic and Knuckles, Chaos reverts to his true form and disappears with Tikal and the reborn Chao.

Other appearances

Chaos has also shown up in Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Adventure 2: Battle as a playable character in the Treasure Hunt multiplayer mode alongside Knuckles, Rouge, and Tikal. The ARK levels of the game also feature a series of enemies known as "Artificial Chaos", robots that have water-like bodies and thus can mimic Chaos' attacks. However, because the ARK had been created 50 years before the events in SA2, it is not known whether they were in fact modeled after Chaos or are just a coincidence.

Chaos is also a secret character in Sonic Battle for the Game Boy Advance. In Emerl's episode of the game, Knux explains that Chaos freezed up this place near Knux's house and that Chaos only appears when things look grim for the world.

Metal Sonic copied Chaos's power in Sonic Heroes. This was most likely done by absorbing Chocola and Froggy, who have previously had contact with Chaos or was done by battling all
