Piggy: Another problem with pot belly pig breeders is that they don't tell people the local laws for pig ownership. In our area, pigs, even pot belly pigs are considered farm animals. They are not permitted inside city limits. There isn't a problem until neighbors call animal control. Then the sad owners...more

Gomer the Pot Belly Pig was our first foray into the world of animal rescue. Although we had been rescuing strays and adopting from shelters out entire lives, it was Gomer who really got us involved. Gomer was rescued as a piglet from some young men who were repeatedly throwing him into a river to ...more

Bubba and Jimmy: Bubba and Jimmy are brothers. They were born on Christmas Day 2000. They were born at a pig rescue and we took them on from there. One of their brothers went to a well known actor who has several rescued piggies happily living on his large property outside of Santa Barbara. They are very shy but super sweet.

Dexter: Dexter is a New Mexican pig. Unfortunately, there are still people breeding and selling pot belly pigs despite the fact that there are thousands in rescue waiting to be adopted. Breeders tell people they won't get any bigger than a cocker spaniel and this just isn't the case. Your average pot belly pig....more

more on Gomer
..see how long he could swim. A kind man who was hiking in the area gave the men $50 in exchange for Gomer. He was the animal caretaker at a private school in the area so Gomer spent 5 years living there with the horses and other animals.Unfortunately, the children at the school were not as closely supervised around Gomer as they should have been. They poked him with sticks and squirted him with water. Even though Gomer has been in our care for 13 years, he still gets a little hysterical when he sees the hose or when we have to rake his pen.
We adopted Gomer from Little Orphan Hammies in California. Marty Fast, who takes care of 50 piggies, several dogs, parrots, frogs and anything else that comes her way, is a dedicated animal advocate. She works tirelessly to care for and rescue mostly pigs. When we met her, she was working full time and spending hours each day on top of that taking care of her piggies. On weekends, she traveled all over southern California trimming piggy hooves and tusks for donations to help support the pigs. We became friends and helped out as much as we could. We learned about rescue and advocacy from the very best.

have a very small amount of time to find a new home for their beloved pets. That's what happened to Piggy. He was happily residing with a family as a house pig. He slept in front of the fireplace in the winter and spent his days hanging out with the dogs. Unfortunately, the neighbors called animal control and Piggy lives at the sanctuary now. He is absolutely adorable and very, very sweet..

reaches over 100 pounds. Farm pigs get to be over 400 pounds so even 100 or 200 pounds is still miniature. When the piggies get too big to be considered “cute” by their uninformed owners, they end up either being butchered or in rescue. Dexter lives with us and is a very well mannered, friendly, sweet boy.
