Boys

Over the last few years we have taken in many hedgehogs in need.  Most are from caring owners who have had a change in circumstance and can no longer keep their hedgehog.  Many are from shelters that come to me rather than stay in the noise of a shelter.  Some have moved on to new homes, some have spent the rest of their lives here and many are still part of our hedgie family or awaiting new owners.

Of them all, little Gizmo is really the only one that can be called a true rescue.  Gizmo was found wandering in the woods by hunters in late October.  It's amazing he survived and I'm certain the only reason he was seen is because he is albino.  He was so terrified when he arrived and stayed in a tight silent ball whenever he heard a noise.  I slept on the couch with his cage beside me for the first week so I could hear and see him at night and know that he was okay.  Over the next few months Gizmo realized he was safe and became a very friendly outgoing little guy.   Gizmo lived out his life here and died April 17,09 with a fast growing oral tumour.

One day my daughter was contacted by a petstore manager asking if we would be willing to take in a baby they were certain was blind.  They were afraid to send her back not knowing what might become of her.   That same morning our beloved Kei had passed away and it seemed like she was arranging this baby in need to come to us.   We knew nothing about the blind hedgehog when a few days later we went to pick it up.  Imagine our surprise to find it was a little albino girl.  We knew then that Kei had had a part in this.  We named the baby Kei after Kei which means white, and Lei which means blossom.  KeiLei is very much the personality of her namesake and it is just about impossible to tell she is blind.  She compensates so well.

Roll on the runway

Roll decided to be a ham for the camera.

He’ed strut to the far end of the table, pause, give me a toothy grin, then he’ed strut back towards me, stop, and give me the toothy look again.

He did this about 5 times. I could almost hear the runway music playing.

He was walking with very pronounced steps and at first I wondered if something was wrong with him but no, he was just strutting his stuff.

Finally he decided to stop and take a taste of the runway.

Girls Play time

I took some photos of the girls playtime one night.   As usual some really had fun, others, well they tolerated it at best.

As usual Snow went around and licked everyone and then annointed over each one.  She annoys the others as she will actually chew at their quills while tasting.  Funny girl.

Peaches as usual wandered around and visited everyone.   She had places to go and hedgies to meet.

Kei's baby (Emma) that has now gone to her new owner thought the toilet paper tube was great and she got to see some hedgies she had never met before.

Kei was not impressed and was very happy when Jess picked her up for a cuddle.  Kei is such a cuddly girl.

Kei's other baby Kesia was a bit overwhelmed by all the new faces although she did start to explore near the end.

Cinder of course licked and annointed over everyone.

Truffles thought the little green cat ball was fun even though she has one of her own in her cage which she totally ignores.

Kenya wasn't thrilled with the other girls and stayed curled up.

Missy socialized for a short while and decided she'd rather be sleeping.

Our Emma cautiously  explored as long as no one looked at her.

Daisy didn't get out as she often will bite the others.

Lily sat in her bag and huffed and popped and got the others all nervous so we put her back in her cage.
