Common Diseases for Guppies

There are a few common diseases that guppies are susceptible to and almost all of these can be treated, they are usually cured by water treatments. These water treatments should be labelled what diseases they cure.

Here is a list of the most common diseases:


These are not all of the diseases because if I did a list like this it would go on forever.

Bacterial fin rot

Signs of illness: The fin has a white edge to it and the fins are frayed. Also in extreme cases the fins can be stuck to the body.

The cause: Bacterial infection of the fins.

Cure: Treat with the correct water treatment, make sure water properties are tip top.

White spot (Ich)

Signs of illness: Small white dots all over the fish's body and fins

Cure: Specific water treatment

Gill flukes

Signs of illness: The fish hangs at the surface of the tank, there gills are open and the fish are breathing heavily. Also the fish may rub their gills on ornaments in their tank.

The cause: A small parasite called a gill fluke.



Cure: Correct water treatment and make sure water properties are excellent and their living conditions are perfect.

Intestinal worms

Signs of illness: Stringy white excreta. Red worms hanging from the anus.

The cause: A parasite called threadworms.



Cure: Use the correct treatment and make sure living conditions are perfect.

These are the most common diseases.
