a book-by-book synopsis of edward & bella's relationship!

Twilight
Bella moves to Forks and finds herself unfairly mistreated by Edward. Since he is attracted to her scent he can barely bear to be around her for too long, so he flees to Alaska, before giving in and coming back to Forks after 2 days. Edward does not want Bella disrupting the life he and his family leads in Forks, so he begins to converse with her in Science class. However, the next day, Bella comes close to being hit by a van. Before the crash, she sees Edward across the parking lot by his car, so how did he push her out of the way and stop the van just a split second later? Bella becomes suspicious and starts asking Edward questions. He becomes frustrated and stops all contact with her for six weeks, until giving in and saying he can't avoid her anymore. They become fast friends, sitting and talking at lunch. Mike Newton invites Bella on a trip to La Push, where she meets up with a family friend named Jacob Black. Jacob tells her that everyone on the reserve has their suspicions about the Cullen family being vampires. Bella is shocked and scared and realizes it's too late to go back on her friendship with Edward.
Bella's being with Edward is a lethal risk as one wrong move could turn his body over to his senses and he could kill her in a split-second... however, to be with Edward, that is a risk Bella is willing to take. He constantly reminds her of this, but she brushes it off and goes to meet his family and joins them for a ball game. At the ball game, a group of "non-vegitarian" (vampires who do suck humans blood) show up and one immediately starts tracking Bella's scent. This lands her in Phoenix, where she gives herself to the vampire. He bites her and nearly kills her before Edward shows up and kills him. Bella then complains of her hand being on fire, where she was bitten. Her only hope is for Edward to suck out the venom. He does, but Bella tells him she wants to be turned into a vampire. He says "no way" (for reasons explained in New Moon) and the two go back to Forks to finish the school year. She unwillingly goes to the prom with him, despite her broken leg and clumsiness.

New Moon
This book starts with Bella being upset that it's her birthday because she is now "older" than Edward. She and Edward are still arguing about turning her into a vampire and she doesn't want to be a lot older than him when he changes her. He throws a surprise birthday party for her, and while opening his gift she gets a paper cut. Edward's youngest "brother", the newest vampire, Jasper, lunges at Bella, finding it harder to resist Bella. She crashes into a table and gets a gash in her arm, needing stitches. Carlisle stitches her up, while one-by-one the Cullens leave as they find it harder and harder to resist her blood. Edward convinces her he doesn't love her anymore, and the family leaves Forks, leaving Bella behind for five months of being "dead to the world".
After leaving Forks, Edward leads a meaningless life. He tries his hand at tracking Victoria, one of the vampires after Bella in Twilight, but has no luck. After time, Edward gets a call from Rosalie, who tells him that Alice had a vision of Bella jumping off a cliff and comitting suicide. Edward goes to Volterra, Italy, and asks the Volturi (a gang of powerful vampires) to kill him. They refuse and so Edward threatens to step into the sun, exposing himself as a vampire. Luckily, Bella and Alice arrive to Volterra just in time to stop Edward from exposing vampires.
Back in Forks, Bella realizes that Edward does love her, and gathers all of the Cullens for a vote on whether Bella should be changed into a vampire. Most vote yes, but agree that it should not happen until after graduating high school. Edward's furious, but later tells Bella he'll change her into a vampire-
if she marries him first.

Eclipse
Edward insists on helping Bella fill out college applications. He brings over some applications and notices the newspaper headline, about multiple murders around Seattle (close to Forks). He reveals that the Cullens believe newborn vampires are behind it. Alice sees Victoria back in town, searching for Bella. After convincing Edward that she will be safe with the Werewolves, Edward allows Bella to go to La Push once in awhile to see Jacob. On one of these visits, Jacob confesses he loves Bella and forces her to kiss him. Bella punches him and breaks her hand. Edward threatens Jacob by telling him if he ever returns her injured again, he'll be "running with three legs" and if he kisses her without her permission again, he'll break his jaw.
Edward reveals he's scared to change Bella into a vampire because vampires have no souls and no place in heaven. He tells her that if there was a way for her to become human again, he'd change her in a second, but there isn't so he's reluctant. Edward proposes to Bella again and she accepts, under the condition that after the wedding they make love while she's still human.
Jacob and Edward make a treaty to work together to protect Bella from Victoria, who is building an army of newborn vampires. They make a battle plan, using Jacob's knowledge of the newborns' and their instincts. They attempt to mislead the army by cutting Bella's arm (for her scent) and Edward reveals that he can control himself much better around her blood. The next day, Bella realizes she is in love with Jacob, but not with the same intensity she feels for Edward. Edward tells Bella he isn't angry with her for loving Jacob, and he understands her frustration.
Bella reluctantly agrees to let Alice plan their wedding. Edward decides he'll make love to Bella before they get married. She declines, citing their original plan, and they decide it's time to tell her father about their engagement.
