Getting Started

So for whatever reason, you have decided that you want to become a fishkeeper. Follow these easy steps, and in no time you'll have a colorful, amazing, active miniature world right in your very own home. This first page will help you decide if fishkeeping is right for you.

Not really sure?

If you don't think you're ready to jump right into the hobby, how about I list some of the reasons people keep fish and the benefits of having an aquarium.

Fishkeeping is the number two hobby in the United States. (Right under photography.) Fish are the number one pet in America, though. There are more than 800 million pet fish in the United States.

Well, you may be asking 'What's with this craze anyway?' There are so many reasons for people to keep fish that I can't list them all! Here are a few reasons...

  • Aquariums are good for your health.
  • Aquariums are beautiful.
  • Aquariums are affordable.
  • Aquariums are easy to take care of.
  • Aquariums are educational.
  • Aquariums are fun!

Aquarium fish provide many health and relaxation benefits. Watching aquarium life has been known to reduce stress and lower blood pressure. A recent study conducted by Drs. Katcher and Beck at the University of Pennsylvania showed that watching an aquarium for 20 minutes did a better job of relaxing dentists' patients than hypnosis. Say it with me, "No more cavities!!"

The aesthetic qualities of aquariums can enchance the beauty of any room. With the new styles and shapes of aquariums and stands now days, it's hard to not find an aquarium that matches the decorating scheme for any room!

Aquariums are affordable and easy to care for. What more do I need to say? Even the dumbest person (Nothing personal) can set up and maintain tropical fish. All you need is about an hour out of your whole month to maintain your tank.

They're also very educational. Think about it. It's like having a mini ecosystem in your living room! You can learn about all sorts of stuff, from biology to chemistry! You can even learn about psychology. Fish are the best teachers!!

Okay, so have I convinced you to go out and get started? Well, what about the reasons to not keep fish?

Why Not To Keep Fish

I don't think there is a reason why fish shouldn't be kept. It's mainly about the person who wants to keep fish. If they don't bother taking care of these creatures than they don't belong in the fishkeeping world. Fish are living beings, just like dogs or cats. Although it doesn't take much responsibility to keep or raise them, it takes commitment on your part. It's not fair to the fish if you don't treat them right. Before you make this kind of commitment, be sure to think about if you are willing to clean the tank and feed the fish. Although, there are people that can help you out with the maitenance part. If you don't like cleaning or maitenance, check the yellow pages. There's sure to be some kind of company in your area that does this for you. As long as you educate yourself enough and plan enough this can be a worthwhile hobby. Reading this website is a great start! Already you'll have 95% more success than the other un-educated aquarists.
