Latin Name: Betta Splendens
Temperment: Male bettas have fighting instincts and when they see other males they will flare, or spread their fins as far out as they can to make them seem larger to the other male. Then they will kill eachother. For these reasons males should not be kept together. Female bettas can be kept together, but you should keep at least four, not just a couple. There will be some nipping at first, but the female will establish a pecking order. They tend to get along with other fish, accept for long finned species like fancy goldfish and nipping species like barbs.
Diet: Betta fish are carnivores. They do not usually prefer flake foods. They enjoy live foods, frozen foods, and freeze dried foods.
Temperature range: 75-86*F
pH: 6.8-7.4
Adult size: 3 inches (7 cm)
The brilliant coloration, and long flowing fins of the Betta make it one of the most well known of aquarium fish. Colors range from red to blue to white. Females are not as highly colored, and have much shorter fins. A well conditioned breeding female will often display horizontal stripes.
