Foreword by Nicky Whiteman;

This website acts as central information resource for our Group Project Team who are undertaking the FA Leadership Course in 2007 led by John Smith and Anne Green.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

"A project to investigate accepted and respected standards of adult behaviour in junior grassroots football"

One of the major findings of TheFA 'Your Game, Your Say' survey was a huge recurring concern over adult behaviour in the grassroots game.  The knock-on effect of this poor behaviour from adults at different levels, is having a significant impact on peoples' involvement and enjoyment of football.

Not only, is this negative behaviour turning our valued Referees and volunteers away from the game but it also setting dangerous prescedent examples of such behaviour to young people.   There is no two ways about it.  Young people are being influenced by adult behaviour in football from many different angles.  Our actions in our positions as Coach, Manager, Parent, Teacher, Referee or Role Model need to set a good example.  Generally, adult behaviour surrounding junior football needs to improve.

But when we talk of 'negative influences' what negatives are we talking about ?

  • Young people do become intimidated by the behaviour of adults on the sidelines of their junior matches...
  • Referees leave the game of football following verbal abuse or physical attacks from players, managers and spectators...
  • Parents refuse to let their children play football as they have seen such poor examples of behaviour by Managers and Coaches...
  • Children imitate the poor actions of superstar footballers which are broadcast of television...

If you were a young person...what would YOU think ?
