Once upon a time, there were thousands of new websites spurting up out of the fountain of the internet, all dedicated to one purpose: to express the fandom of Lord of the Rings. For many years these sites stayed strong, despite the difficulties of advertisements, domain costs and lack of visitor activity. They stayed strong because of their passion for the fandom, an infectious fervor. But one day, when the hits hit a new level of low, when there was no cause left to hope that anyone would participate, or even view, their sites again, the many mighty webmasters abandoned their fan sites. In the face of that evil named Inactivity, we, the webmasters of the Lord of the Rings Fandom, shall triumph again! But not without your help.If you are a webmaster and would like to join The Fellowship of the Web, The Return of the Update 2008, please comment in this update or e-mail me. You must include your website name, URL and the approximate date your site opened. More will be told once you are enlisted. PLEASE JOIN! The success of this project will depend COMPLETELY on participation - we need your help! (And trust me when I say if you don't come to me, I'll come to you!)
All right. Now that that has been announced, on to regular updates. There's a lot this week - yay!
Graphics
- The graphic page's javascript was getting on my nerves, so I'm sure it was getting on everyone else's. The prompt only there because it was cool, so I took it off. Now all you have to do is click the "I Agree" button to get into the graphics page. Also, I edited the agreement a bit, but the same basic concepts stayed. I just took out a lot of unnecessary wording.
- I edited the request page and the form on it. It used to be so that you could click on both Icon and Banner. You shouldn't have been able to do that. Also, claims are gone because no one wanted to claim anything, so I took that possibility off as well.
- I made two new blends. The first, Don't Speak, was made for an Add Effects contest at Middle-earth. The second, For Whom, was made because I was extremely bored yesterday and I really got into an Aragorn/Arwen love theme as you can see with my...
- Three new icons. They're mostly Arwen-related, but the last is lovey-dovey for my favorite ship. Contrasts a bit with my last batch, doncha think?
- I renamed the Avatar page Icon because I like the word better.
- I tried desperately to organize the icon page with PHP so that it would look a lot better. It would have been on a lot more pages and wouldn't have taken up so much space. After an hour and a half figuring out the code (because I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to PHP), I figured out that Freewebs doesn't support that script. So whoosh! out the window with that plan.
Site
- I re-organized the past layouts page so that it goes in most recent order. I like it better that way. I also made the new layout a new blurbish type thing in there.
- I made sure all the links on the affiliates page still worked. Dead links = evil.
- I refitted the disclaimer page so that that ugly, ugly Freewebs bar doesn't cover up all the content on the pop-up window. I've gotta find a way to destroy that thing.
Visitor
- I revamped the entire games page. No more game of the month. It's all neat and orderly, too!
I even managed the combine the puzzles and games page together. - One new madlib, up and ready to go for a test drive! Let me know how it goes.
- We have two new games. One is Tic-Tac-Toe, which is basically tic-tac-toe, but it's got Aragorn as the X and Sauron as the O. It's pretty neat. Check it out when you have the time! Second is The Lottery, which will be a monthly ordeal. When you get your lottery number, you have to screencap (PrtSc + Alt) your computer window, paste it into Paint, save it and then upload it onto an image server. When the end of the month comes around, I will announce the winning numbers. Whoever sends me the screencapture of the closest number to the winning one will win a prize!
- Please enter the caption contest! Please, please, please! I really need more entries before I can judge it. And on the matter of needing, I also need more entries for my other contests in Truly Intrepid. If/when you have time, please consider it!
