Well, if you had fun with the Old Howell Eateries Trivia... how about some Old Howell Shops & Businesses... I'll make a list from an old yearbook(s)... if I get some more time, I might scan photos from old yearbooks, or maybe some of you worked there and might have some of your own. In any case, this should bring back some memories!
From the 1964 Torch advertising section (since it's the oldest one I have) ... so it's not just shops, but includes a variety of businesses from that era. For those of you in or familiar with Howell now, you might tell us what stores match up with these storefronts now. For others, you might recall other businesses that were located at these addresses. Notice there is no "546" in the telephone numbers. And notice too if the business had a slogan, I included that from the display ad in the yearbook.

Just spoke with Mr. Itsell at the services for Pete Baldwin Friday 8/31 and he still looks as dapper as ever! Uses a cane and the arm of son Dennis to get around, but he was a bright and chipper as I remember him. I told him, because I didn't know how to "tie a tie" until he taught me, I think of him every time I put on a tie or tie one for one of the boys in the high school where I teach because word has gotten around, that on game day, "Go see Mr. Salisbury. He knows how!"

CITIZENS MUTUAL INSURANCE COMPANY STILL THERE!
GREEN'S MUSIC CENTER 840 E. Grand River Phone 810 ... originally I believe located on State Street, I recall being able to go into a glassed-in booth and listen to a record (Yes, VINYL kiddies!) before determining if I wanted to purchase it. One of the first 45 I purchased there was in 1963, "So Much In Love" by The Tymes and the other was by Dion and The Belmonts... what a bargain it was! "Runaround Sue" on one side and "Runaway Girl" on the other! Two hits for the price of one. And I believe 45s were 69 cents at the time.
Second bit of trivia, is that by 1964, Green's move from State Street to East Grand River (next to what was then an A&P store) into the "Timbers Building" and into the same end of the building whose previous tenant was "Salisbury's Market." If I recall, Green's didn't last long there and the next tenant was a beauty school. Today, the building is gone and the location is now the site of a gas station and small party store.

COUSINS PRINTING CO. 124 N. State Street Phone 1042
REULAND ELECTRIC CO. 4500 E. Grand River Phone 1430 -- Still in business aren't they?
WHMI 1350 RADIO The radio station was above Shippey's Paint, now a wine shoppe, which was next to Heller's Flowers. At the time, the station was ONLY broadcasting an AM signal and their FCC license (first owned by Mel Wirth and later the Bignall family) allowed the station to only be on the air from sunrise to sunset. Do you recall when the Friday night games were "tape delayed" and rebroadcast on Saturday mornings? Folks from my class should know this trivia question, but who was the first "voice of Livingston County?" Maybe you went to his teen dances at the "Blue Lantern" on Island Lake in Brighton? Or later at the "old" Howell Armory next door to the Howell Theater? Or later in the all-purpose room at Southeast School? And speaking of the Howell Theater... how come those tight-wads didn't ever advertise in the yearbooks? The old poops!
