Olive Clara Coddington was born November 3, 1906 in Detroit, Michigan to William James and Olive (Hill) Appling and went to her final resting place on December 31, 2007 surrounded by her family. In 1915 she moved with her family to Fenton where her paternal grandparents, William and Alma Appling lived. She attended school in Detroit, Fenton, country schools in Deerfield Twp. and near Parshallville, and Hartland Consolidated School. Her mother died in 1920 and she missed a great deal of school due to staying home to care for her younger siblings. As a child she worked at picking berries, cleaning house and babysitting to help with family finances. In High School she worked for a family that ran a hardware store, gas pumps and the local telephone exchange and she learned to operate everything. She graduated from Hartland High School in 1926, attended Livingston County Normal and in June 1927 earned her teaching certificate. She taught school for one year at the Baetke school in Genoa Twp. prior to her marriage. On March 30, 1928 she married Albert J. Coddington of Genoa Twp. in Howell, MI. Their honeymoon consisted of spending the night with relatives and moving to their own farm home on Beck Road the next day. After two years they moved to Bowan Road, south of Fowlerville where they bought a farm. Olive had to milk cows by hand during the depression while Albert worked other jobs in order to make ends meet. Later they bought a farm on Crooked Lake Road where Olive raised chickens and sold eggs for extra income. In May 1943 they purchased the farm on Pinckney Road. Between 1929 and 1941 they had four children during which time Olive helped with the farming as well as maintaining her home. They sold most of the farm during the early 1960’s but continued to live in a home on the original farm. Olive also worked at Baldwin's Hardware in Howell, taught school in several one room rural schools and Birkenstock School. She needed to have a four year degree in order to continue teaching and earned her BS degree from Eastern Michigan University in 1962 and taught until 1964 when she devoted her time to caring for her grandchildren. Olive was a member of the Walnut Street Methodist Church and later the First United Methodist Church in Howell. She belonged to the Ruth Circle, the Philathea Class and Hilltoppers. She also belonged to the Marion Community Circle from the time they moved to Pinckney Road. Vincent Gleason, a resident of Chevy Chase, Maryland, died at his home on September 18, 2007. He was five days short of 88 and succumbed to a respiratory illness. He was long associated with the National Park Service in Washington where he directed that agency's nation-wide publication program for more than three decades. Although his interests remained with his work and family, he nevertheless cherished his family's rural origins around Howell, Michigan, and association that went back to the state's territorial days and the homestead claimed by his Great Grandfather, James Gleason, and Irish barrister, in Hartland Township in 1836-37. Vincent Gleason grew up in Michigan's central Livingston County in the period between the wars when dairying was still dominant and the area retained much of its 19th century husbandry; albeit, the regional growth of the 20th century's automotive industry was rapidly taking hold in the surrounding cities. This confluence of rural and urban interests in his own background infused his work in Park Service publishing where there was a need for interpreting and managing an ever growing diversity of natural, historical, industrial and recreational properties in the midst of unprecedented us of the parks. Following military service during World War Two, he majored in design and the graphic arts at Michigan State College, earning both a bachelor's and master's degree. In 1949, he was awarded one of the first Fulbright Scholarships, spending two years in Europe pursing his studies. He joined the National Park Service in 1962 as head of that agency's publication program, a position he held until his retirement in 1994. In the mid 1960's he proposed and lead an effort to build a contemporary design studio in West Virginia on the ground of Storer College, the first Freedman's School, then in Park Service Custody as part of its Harpers Ferry Historical Park. He traveled widely in the country and abroad on behalf of the conservation and was awarded the Department of the Interior's Meritorious and Distinguished Service Medals for his contributions. President Ronald Reagan awarded him and his staff the First Presidential Design Award for the group's influential publications program. The American Institute of Graphic Arts also cited him and the National Park Service for the success of the agency's maps, guides, books and posters at parks around the country: a program that of necessity had expanded to meet the needs of a growing National Park System in which the number of park sites doubled from about 200 in 1960 to nearly 400 by the 1990's. In 1953, while residing in Hartland, Michigan, Vincent Gleason married Thelma Ernst of Warsaw, Illinois at Cranbrook Academy near Detroit where she was a staff dietitian in the Kingswood School for Girls - a marriage that lasted until 2003 when his wife died. The couple's five offspring live and work in the Washington, DC area. They include Rosanne Roe of Gaithersburg, Maryland; twins Kathryn and Carolyn of Washington; Norman of Silver Spring; Sharon of Herndon, Virginia; one grandson, Preston West and two adopted granddaughters, Maryann Roe, and Kathryn West. Independent minded, Vincent Gleason tended to resist the ceremonial, in death preferring to get quietly on with what needed to be done. In honor of Vincent's life, donations can be made to Georgetown University School of Medicine at the following location Georgetown University School of Medicine In Memory of Vincent Leo Gleason, 3900 Reservoir Road NW. Medical Dental Building NW109, Washington, DC. 20057. Checks can be made payable to Georgetown University School of Medicine.
